Hey JP, thanks for posting! And I'm certainly in your debt for asking Mary & Greg to re-post about the event, since otherwise I would have missed out on what was a fantastic experience.

Fair point about Springsteen and you're not the first to make it. I haven't, in fact, seen him live; and unfortunately with ticket prices being what they are I'm unlikely to anytime soon. :/ I've also been told that as soon as I acquire and listen to "Nebraska" my appreciation for him will shoot through the roof.

And great point about it almost being over the top or corny but never crossing that line. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Kevin,

I enjoy your blog, and I'm glad you enjoyed The Hold Steady. I was actually the one who asked Mary & Greg to repost about the show. I try to let as many people know about THS, because they are the best live band I've ever seen (aside from Bruce Springsteen). If you can't quite get into him, it might be because you haven't seen him live yet (if, in fact, you haven't). The two common denominators about the live shows of both Bruce and THS are 1) that their songs just sound better in a live setting than the studio recordings and 2) that they both bring this infectious theatric, near manic approach to their live performances that completely borders on being over the top or corny, but (almost) never crosses that line.

#5 (Kacey) - And now you'll NEVER forget! :)

#6 (James) - I totally get it. I could do an entire blog post for bands like that whose sound I really should dig but just can't no matter how hard I try. First ones to pop up in my head: Bruce Springsteen (despite them being a big influence on other bands I like; I think I have touched on that somewhere on here before) and Grizzly Bear are the first ones that pop up in my head.

I really really really want to like the Hold Steady. Their sound is refreshing as far as rock music goes. But I can't get into them. I can't handle the lead singer's style (or should that be crossed out and replaced with ability/talent). I'm really not one to talk as a musician myself, my singing isn't a strong point, but -- truthfully -- I just can't listen to the Hold Steady. I'm sure it's just a to-each-his-own thing.

Well, if I had known you were going, I would have told you! Communication is a two-way street, my dear.

You also should be following me on Twitter, where I announced I would be going. For shame!

It was a fantastic show! I'm kinda glad of that the sound system failed, it made the show feel like a fun jam instead of a "this is what we do for a living" kind of thing. Why didn't you tell me you were going? We could have rocked out together. :)

Good show, nice to hear some of the new tunes.

True to form, THS definitely stayed positive last night despite their technical issues.

There IS so much joy in what they do - "How a Resurrection" was manic and perfect.

I love it when a band's live performance makes me like them more. Mark and I saw the Drive-By Truckers in Boston last weekend. I'd heard some of their songs, but their set blew me away. I felt the same way after seeing the Avett Brothers in Ithaca, too.
