Dunno if you heard about it, but there was a college that recently banned its students’ access to social media websites for a week. I heard a lot about how it was going to happen, but never heard much of the follow up. Might be something to check out and compare to your reactions.

I don’t know, I am in my 40’s and I love facebook. I reconnected with a ton of people from high school and even some relatives. Come on Joe, resistance is futile…you WILL BE ASSIMILATED….and as far the privacy thing, you only have to put on there what you want. I usully avoid the…”making dinner”…”home alone,and passed out on the couch, with no gun,someone come and kill me…” status updates.

Joseph – I think you hit the nail on the head. It is absolutely a generational thing; I think that there’s far less of a desire for privacy in people my age than for previous generations.

Kevin:
I never even want to start facebook – my wife created an account in my name to help a friend with Cafe World. I never actually use the account – although I have accepted a few friends from work and blogland. Not only do I not want these accounts to define me – I have no desire for EVERYONE to know my every thought every second.

Granted my blog is similar in that I like to take the time to respond to each person but to me the message is more important than the messenger.

Had a student create a MySpace account for me a few years ago and it had as you can imagine some stuff I didn’t care for. The 14 year old girl responsible got suspended but unfortunately because she was a minor legal action was not “in the cards” – long story but in the end it still leaves me with bad taste – private is the way I want my life to be. Some people try to track down old firends and I can’t say I have not tried but generally for me the past is the past and I intend to leave it that way – I always move forward and never back.

That what is seen can not be unseen.

That having been said, I don’t any of us can who use social media to any extent can or will view the film with ‘a fresh set of eyes’. Maybe step back a bit and see more of ourselves than usual, but unless we pull a real ‘The Gods Must Be Crazy’ move- we’re always going to be tainted by our experiences.
