Maybe you have an extremely different opinion of what art is, look up the definition of Art on merriam-webster.com and you will find that in just about every definition Art has one word, skill. Something that Girl Talk clearly has. And if you dont like listening to what "kids" are listening to today, then maybe you should stick with your vinyl records of ACDC grandpa.

Niko, my dear, you should read things before you reply to them. That way you won't look silly.

It's dance music, what do you expect? It's not meant for your old guy critical analysis. He's not mashing up music so he can receive praise from critics saying "oh his missy elliot/nirvana mashup was pure brilliance, so artistic" No he's making cool dance music because its awsome. Don't call something bad just because its nowhere near relevant to your standards.

First if all, I love Girl Talk. I have his last three albums. I think that what he does is fresh and interesting. He's taking bits and pieces of things and putting them together in fascinating ways. Remember that all instruments, whether they are acoustic, electric, or digital, are tools and what you get out of them depends entirely on what you put into them. A person can play a computer or a pair of turntables well and a person can play a violin badly. One is not inherently superior to the other.

I also think, Kevin, that you "chair/carpenter" analogy is quite apt. What is a chair? It is something you sit in. Can a chair be functional and a work of art? Sure it can. I have a cousin who is a brilliant wood worker and I'd put his stuff on a much higher level than the guy who just hammers a couple of boards together. So it is with Girl Talk. What is this music for? It's for dancing. And it succeeds brilliantly at being exciting, engaging dance music. You put one of Girl Talk's discs on, and it's an instant party. The groove is continuous. Is there anything wrong with music made for dancing? Of course not.

I have a buddy who is a great musician. He's a singer/songwriter. Lately however he's gotten into this computer generated Dub-step crap. I told him to put the computer down and pick up his guitar. I asked him WHY he makes this dub-crap....his answer....he makes more $$ dj'ing with this stuff than playing out w/ his own (very good) stuff....I guess if there's money in all this "new" stuff, it will continue to be produced..it's not for us used to be hip guys I guess....
and Chuck....Dave Edmunds rocks.
