You've gotta love how they squeezed another day of action out her lame column -- and in the process turned her into some sort of journalism folk hero.

The original piece was carefully crafted to get a rise out of Bills fans -- and then they hand-selected the worst of the worst reactions to keep things going. It was all very artfully done, but at it's core, completely fake and phony.

Having said that, allow me to share a a limerick left in the comments on my blog post by someone who identifies herself as Poetess:

There once was a woman named Gish;
Reporting the sports was her wish.
She ran down the Bills
Now she’s up to her gills
With comments that stink like a fish.

I know you brushed on it, but it bears mentioning that the Times Union milked everything they could out of this Times Union centered and Times Union created storyline. I was more embarassed for them posting a picture of Bills fans with bags on their heads for the main page picture for most of yesterday afternoon / evening. Is that imagery with links to the comments and reactions allowed so that cooler heads will prevail? Or is it a way to keep flanning the flames and increasing the page clicks? (no need to answer)
I read through the emails - even though I knew what they said based on comments - and it appears that many of them are written by the same person based on style, language and points made. Even if they were signed by different names, a little IP look-up would probably verify this. I think this is important because if there are only 5-6 actual nasty emailers, the Times Union is really making themselves look ridiculous.

Spot on, Kevin. I'm upset that those comments were made to Gish as well, not only because they're completely unacceptable, but because that has now become the issue. It's eclipsing the fact that McKim was lied to about how his interview was going to be used, and it's eclipsed the fact that the official TU response to a request from readers to cover the Bills a bit more was to kick them in the gut.

It's interesting is that the Times Union has yet to publish a single reaction to that piece that was civil and thought out, particularly McKim's letter to Gish and the editors over there since he was a subject in the article (and felt particularly wronged). This became glaring when Gish's column published the lewd and crass comments yesterday, over a week later, with still no sign of publication for McKim in sight. Any questions posed yesterday on twitter as to why a "well mannered" response hasn't been published were only met with dismissive, and some rude, comments from people at the TU.

LOC online are often nasty; go to Salon or any number of other places.
Interesting that the PRINT TU letters are never allowed to get that nasty as the TU online columns. Providing what, exactly, I'm not sure, except that online folks feel freer to be a$$holes. Sad.
