Never one to pass up an opportunity to make an easy joke that requires little to no effort, Family Guy and American Dad creator Seth MacFarlane has agreed to host the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen, which is set to air in September against the season premiere of CBS’s “Two and a Half Ashtons Men.”

“In addition to his sharp wit, Seth is way more suave and sophisticated than we are,” said Kent Alterman, head of original programming and production at Comedy Central. “We continue to try and soil him.”

They’re joking, of course, because there’s nothing suave or sophisticated about Comedy Central’s Roasts, which choose easy targets – often those that are drug-addled and/or mentally ill but sometimes legit comedic legends – and pepper them with B-grade jokes about their most obvious and public failings.

It’s almost worse when they do it to someone legit, like Joan Rivers, who was actually legitimately hurt by the fact that the Roast reduced her and her long, storied career to a punchline. But there’s still something wrong with doing it to someone like Sheen, who is only getting it because of all the terrible things he’s done and the bad behavior he’s exhibited over the course of the past year.

Roasts aren’t supposed to be an opportunity to tear down a legend or pick apart an easy target. There’s supposed to be an art to it. The New York Friar’s Club exemplifies this with their roasts. The motto, “we only roast the ones we love,” isn’t an excuse, it’s an explanation. The jokes are biting, but not cruel. They zing, but don’t sting. They’re blue, not black.

I wouldn’t necessarily say I hold anything against Comedy Central or anyone that is willing to stand up and laugh about Charlie’s coke habit or call Joan Rivers old for the umpteenth time, because I get it. Money is money. I just wish they could find a way to earn it by doing a Roast that is more keeping in the tradition and that especially puts more deserving “targets” up for public display.

Some time ago, local mid-life scenester blog All Over Albany asked its readers to provide the penultimate definition of the term hipster. The term had been used as a barb in recent discussions, in particular concerning the great Albany chickens debate.

This guy used to be something. Now he's just a pejorative.

The definition I provided:

Hipster [hips*tur] n.

1. A person on the internet with whom you disagree; in particular the person should be young and liberal.

2. An ihabitant of Williamsburgh whose identity hinges on the increasing level of obscurity in their musical tastes and their battle with Hasidic Jews over whether or not bike lanes should be added to their streets.

3. Bombers patron who is insistent on an imminent relocation to New York City that never happens.

4. An individual who forsakes all clothing and technology developed in the last twenty years, as such wears clothes only from thrift stores and listens to vinyl; distant cousin of Pennsylvania Amish.

5. Daniel Nester

Of course, my definition is meant to be tongue in cheek, but the word has acquired a bit more sting in recent years.

The term “hipster” been around in some form for decades, starting with the beatnik movement in the 1950s. One didn’t strive to become a hipster, and it was a word that one would never call themselves. However, it’s only recently that the term has acquired such a fiercely negative connotation. A hipster used to be somebody who was at worst trying a bit too hard to fit into a scene, but more recent applications have invoked hostility towards liberal policy and gentrification. It started as a backlash against trust fund artists and enfant terribles that occupied Williamsburgh in Brooklyn, but has since expanded in scope both in terms of geography and the type of person earning the label. As such the word has all but lost its original meaning and become an insult as common in application as “d-bag” or “a-hole” and almost interchangeable with the terms.

I’m dreading the day when I have children and have to chastise one child for calling another a hipster. Then I’ll tell kids that in my day “hipster” meant a very specific type of person, and also there was a time when if you wanted to watch a television show you had to do so at a very specific time determined by a network. Then they’ll both stare at me like I’m from another planet, and I’ll say “shut up and eat your dinner.”

The New York Post‘s “Page Six” today reported on the worst-kept secret in Albany: the romantic entanglement between State Senators Jeffrey Klein (the Bronx & Westchester) and Diane Savino (Brooklyn & Staten Island).

“Oh my God, you guys,” one State Senator was (not) quoted as saying. “I see them smoking cigarettes together and eating together and everything! During third period I heard they’re going steady, but I also heard that they’ve been holding hands for, like, oh my God, weeks. Like a long time.”

Some politicos are crying foul – seriously – because Savino joined Klein’s Independent Democratic Caucus which arose from dissatisfaction with John Sampson’s leadership. For one, they probably have it backwards: the romantic entanglement more likely stems from shared views, not the other way around. More importantly, any politician in Albany citing a conflict of interest because the two are an item is like Charles Manson shouting “murderer!” across the prison cafeteria at someone eating a piece of chicken.

Most annoying of all? The pet name given to the couple – “Klavino.”

It’s 2011. Can we stop with that combining names bulls*** already?
