Even though UFC 133 was riddled with injuries, like so many other events that have shaky prospects it proved in the end to be one of the more entertaining events in recent memory.

The finalized main event of Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz had only been solidified two weeks prior and had metamorphosed from an earlier bout that was supposed to be Evans’ long-awaited title shot against former teammate and current UFC Light Heavyweight champion, Jon Jones. A hand injury that was supposed to keep Jones out until later in the year (but healed up in time for him to accept a fight for next month against Quinton Jackson) cancelled that bout. Jones was replaced with Penn State wrestling standout and rising star Phil Davis, who himself got injured three weeks out of the event and was replaced by Tito Ortiz, who took the fight just six weeks removed from his upset of former contender Ryan Bader.

Got all that? No? Okay, well, bear with me anyway.

A rundown of the event is after the jump.

The evening opened with a welterweight bout pitting Rafael (Brazilian and pronounced “hah-fie-el”) Natal against Paul Bradley. Bradley went by “The Gentleman,” one of the stranger monikers in MMA given the fact that he was actually kicked off the UFC’s reality competition show on Spike TV, “The Ultimate Fighter,” due to a flare-up of herpes. Bradley is a waspy fighter who seemingly excels at nothing other than having a large physique who can cut weight. It showed, as he succumbed to a far superior tactician in Natal.

Mike Thomas Brown (front) vs. Nam Phan (back)

The second bout featured a former champion in the 145-pound featherweight division, Mike Brown, taking on another former “Ultimate Fighter” cast-off in Nam Phan. Phan is a fiery and competitive fighter, but ultimately succumbed to Brown’s experience and tenacity. Brown, who had been on a terrible losing skid since dropping his Featherweight title to Jose Aldo and joining the UFC as part of its absorption of WEC (another league acquired by Zuffa that featured primarily lighter weight classes), won not only the fight but a stay of execution. A loss would have meant three straight, which means all but automatic dismissal from the organization.

While the two previous bouts had provided some entertaining fare considering their low placement on the card, the third contest pitting Johnny Hendricks against Mike Pierce failed to incite as much enthusiasm and elicited boos from the late-arriving Philly fans. Hendricks, a wild slugger with a beard that bears an uncomfortable resemblance to that of a Guantanamo detainee, won the fight in a split decision.

Nick Pace takes the back of Ivan Menjivar.

The final non-televised bout featured Nick Pace facing Ivan Menjivar in one of the more surreal crowd moments of the evening. Sitting across from us, a fan decked in a sponsor’s garb and wearing horn-rimmed glasses that did not appear to contain any actual lenses dispensed fighting advice in a falsetto screach to Pace for the entirety of the fight. He became very emotional at times and did not let up, even when people around us started actively rooting for Menjivar due to their annoyance with his incessant screeching. Pace lost the fight and the fan stormed off and wasn’t seen for a good ten minutes. No indication was given that he was a teammate or friend of Pace. Very strange indeed, but that was nothing compared to what went down below us during the main event. More on that later.

The live Spike TV transmission started with Chad “Money” Mendes taking on Rani Yahya, who has one of the best names in all of sports until you realize that the proper pronunciation (unfortunately not acknowledged by the UFC) is actually “HA-nee Ya-ya,” at which point it becomes THE best name in all of sports. Unfortunately, Mendes is just too damn good, as evidenced by his unbeaten record. He’s most likely next in line for the UFC’s Featherweight Champion, another Brazilian by the name of Jose Aldo who drew early comparisons to fellow phenom Anderson Silva but looked all too human in his last outing. Mendes is undefeated in the sport and could be a tough test for Aldo when and if that fight happens.

Matt Hamill (left) vs. Alex Gustafsson (right)

The second televised fight featured legally deaf fighter Matt Hamill taking on young Swede Alexander Gustafsson. Hamill’s a longtime favorite of fans, having overcome a handicap to become the only deaf fighter ever in the history of the UFC and achieve some measure of success in two weight divisions. In the last couple years he had moved up a rung in competition and found some difficulty adjusting. Saturday night was no different, as he faced the young prospect Gustafsson, a tall Swede who is one of a number of European kickboxers making the transition to MMA. It was an ugly fight. Hamill, like so many others on the cards, was a last minute replacement, and as such it didn’t seem like they’d taken much time in scouting Gustafsson and vice-versa. The result was an unsound, jagged boxing match. Especially frustrating was watching Gustafsson, the eventual winner despite the fact that he didn’t seem to know how to throw a straight jab. For someone with that sort of potential and especially the reach advantage he’ll have at 205 pounds, that’s almost criminal. The next day, Hamill announced his retirement from the sport, citing nagging injuries that had accumulated going all the way back to his days wrestling in Middle and High School.

After that disappointing affair, it was time for the pay-per-view to begin.

Rory MacDonald (front) bides his time against Mike Pyle (back)

The pay-per-view broadcast started off with a welterweight contest featuring two diametrically positioned fighters: the twenty-two-year-old Rory MacDonald, who has scored some impressive wins and whose only loss came in a shockingly competitive bout with top five welterweight Carlos Condit, and aging veteran Mike Pyle. Pyle is an entertaining fighter, but he’s essentially done as a competitor and is now just fighting to stay on television and continue receiving a paycheck. MacDonald, who was only ten years old when Pyle made his pro debut, shocked the crowd by dominating the first few minutes on his feet, then taking it to the ground and finishing Pyle with punches four minutes into the first round.

Costa Philippou (left) vs. Jorge Rivera (right)

There was some personal investment in the next bout, as one of its competitors is a training partner of Gabe, our friend that accompanied (and drove) us to Philly. Costa Philippou, a native of Cyprus, trains at Ray Longo’s gym with Gabe and former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra. It was a heart-wrenching affair for me, because of all the opponents he could have been facing, that night he was taking on Jorge Rivera. Rivera is the perennial comeback kid. Likable, self-deprecating, and the sort of veteran you want to have around your sport, Rivera shows no shortage of heart in his fights and seems to genuinely give a little bit back to the sport every time he’s out there just by virtue of his attendance. He’s also a dedicated family man, and the sort of guy you want representing MMA in the mainstream.

In August of 2008, Rivera lost his oldest daughter Janessa to leukemia (please see comments). She was only 17-years-old. The pain of their loss kept him out of the sport for nearly a year. Having just nieces and nephews, I can’t even fathom the loss of a first born. Janessa is memorialized by a likeness tattooed on her father’s left pectoral, permanently embedded near the fighter’s heart.

But it was Costa’s night. Going against a fighter as smart and well-rounded as Rivera is no easy task, particularly for someone who’s only been in the sport three years, but he showed good composure on the ground. Rivera, naturally, made everything a struggle and fought anything and everything the much younger Cyprian could put up.

It went to the judge’s scorecards, where Costa won the bout via split decision. The decision reflected how I personally scored the bout, but with no shortage of hesitancy. Rivera walked off, defeated for the second consecutive time. This fight, too, was a late addition, as both competitors were in separate contests against opponents that had to pull out just weeks from the event. One can hope that this is weighed down the line should Rivera find himself in the dreaded position of having dropped three in a row, which all but guarantees a cut in most cases. The way that most of you reading this feel about a player like Jorge Posada of the New York Yankees and his current career troubles is how I feel in regards to Rivera. The guy has been nothing but a boon the sport. Despite never having won a championship or even getting a title shot, the UFC would be worse off without him around. That’s projecting, though, and perhaps doing so unfairly. Jorge Rivera has proven many things over the course of the last decade, all of them consistently boiling down to one word: resiliency. I’m not a gambling man, but even if I were, I’d never bet against him regardless of the odds or the circumstances.

Brian Ebersole, with an up arrow shaved into his chest (seriously), finishes Dennis Hallmann.

Speaking of veterans, two more faced off in the next welterweight contest. Brian Ebersole, famous for having fought over forty fights before getting his first shot at the UFC (and also for shaving a disconcerting up arrow into his chest) faced off against Dennis Hallmann. Hallmann had, in recent weeks, caught the ire of several people including myself for his statements in support of the controversial Testosterone Replacement Therapy that has run rampant through the sport and become a way for fighters to bypass conventional drug testing for steroids and other PEDs, many of which are not detectable themselves but are detected through sudden spikes or drops in hormone levels. Hallmann’s claim that he and others should be allowed to use and abuse the Therapy because they medically require it in order to remain competitive against much younger competition is as absurd as it is arrogant. He came out to his fight wearing speedos, which drew groans from the crowd when camera shots on the ground caught him at an unseemly and revealing angle. More disturbing to me, though, was the fact that he literally had track marks running up and down his arms. Ebersole quickly dispatched of him in brutal fashion, almost as if he was enacting a punishment on our behalf for Hallmann’s outright defiance of sportsmanship and common decency. After the event, in lieu of a “Submission of the Night” bonus (since there were none on the card), Dana White gave Ebersole a secondary “Knockout of the Night” bonus and joked that he was giving it to him for getting Hallmann’s shorts off television as quickly as possible. White committed to the joke, going so far as to make it so that the bonus itself was officially listed in the records as a bonus “For Getting Those Shorts Off Television As Quickly As Possible.”

Epic.

In the co-main event of the evening, former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort made quick work of Yoshihiro Akiyama. Fans stateside had given Akiyama the nickname “Sexyama” due to his impeccably groomed appearance and use of Andrea Bocelli’s “Time to Say Goodbye” as his entrance theme. Tonight he used the song again, accompanied by graphics placed throughout the arena of pink flower petals slowly descending over images of the Japanese fighter.

Vitor, who had spent much of his career at Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight, made a very rough transition to Middleweight (185) two years ago. He was put on a path to face Middleweight champion Anderson Silva. The fact that he received the title shot as a fulfilled prophecy of marketing and management rather than earning it showed against Silva, who made quick work of the man nicknamed “Phenom” for his early rise to stardom. Here he was making his return against Akiyama, a man who is a favorite of fans for his reckless and tough style, which is a trait common in many Japanese fighters. He also has a critical failing that is also common in Japanese fighters: an unwillingness to cut weight. Akiyama should easily be a Welterweight fighting at 170. Instead, he has gone into every single fight in the UFC at 185 (actually weighing in anywhere from 180-184) and has been severely undersized. In particular, tonight he was facing a different Vitor Belfort than we’ve seen in recent years who looked better physically than he has in years. Unlike against Silva, Belfort looked slimmer, refreshed, and hydrated. 185 was not an easy transition for him, but it looks like he’s finally lost a bit of muscle mass and developed some consistency in weight and cardio training. It’s good news for fans of the old Vitor, and very bad news for everyone else in the Middleweight division.

Then came the main event of the evening.

Tito Ortiz (left) vs. Rashad Evans (right)

It had taken some twists and turns, but in the last week the heat and anticipation had built for the ad-hoc encounter between Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz. Due to several injuries and false starts, Evans had taken a fourteen month lay-off while waiting for his promised shot at the Light Heavyweight Championship even longer. Although in its initial incarnation this was supposed to be that opportunity, in the eyes of many fans the time off meant that Evans still had to prove that he could hang at the top of the division. A year is a long time in MMA, which is a rapidly evolving sport, without even taking into account ring rust. Ortiz, on the other hand, found himself in a no-lose situation. He’s a living legend who went over five years without a win in the sport, but a recent encounter with a young (former) top 5 Light Heavyweight ended in a stunning submission win for Ortiz. He, like Vitor, looked like a man reborn.

Evans, though, wouldn’t be denied. He put a scare into Tito early on the feet and repeated the highlight slam from their previous encounter in 2007, which ended in a rare unanimous draw after three rounds.

Then, in my peripheral vision, I saw what I thought was the stream of a full, large beer being tossed towards the Octagon. I looked down to the floor level and saw security approaching several fans. They tried escorting one of them out, but in a scene that is stereotypically Philly, a fight broke out that nearly turned into a riot. It thankfully fell out of my line of sight, and I returned to watching the fight. Two minutes later, one of the perpetrators was sat down in front of us, his head being wrapped by an EMT while a police officer waited to escort him first to the hospital, then to jail.

Before continuing with the fight, I do want to say this: I think I love Philly and its crowds. The best and worst thing about them is their enthusiasm and passion. Thing is, I had a wonderful time with everyone around me. To my right, I had a group of four friendly guys, three of which had questions about the sport that they’d occasionally pose to me. Whereas I’ve found that people going into it tend to want to joke about it, they treated it as a serious curiosity and became fans by the end of the night. Behind me, another group and I would converse about fights, usually without anything other than a lean and with no eye contact. We also bonded with a young couple in front of us, shaking hands at the end of the night and telling each other to drive safe. Next to them, a guy had lost his wallet that I spotted and pointed out to him, but only after everybody else around him – complete strangers – did everything they could to assist. That is, literally, everyone around me, and they couldn’t have been any more pleasant. It was really a pleasure to be around them and it was the best, and I do mean this, the BEST live sporting event I ever attended in terms of camaraderie of my immediate neighbors. The problem, though, is that Philly is one of those cities that always has three bad fans that completely ruin the experience through their insistence on acting like the worst possible human beings. Trust me, though, when I say it is far from the norm and should not be a blight on that city or its fans. Philly, you’re just PHINE in my book!

Ergh. Sorry. Anyway, back to the fighting IN the Octagon.

Rashad Evans stuffs a takedown attempt from Tito Ortiz

The second round of the main event was a repeat of the first. Tito did what he could, but Evans is curiously and woefully underrated despite his ranking in teh sport. What’s truly amazing about him is his wrestling. Evans is, essentially, a 185 fighter competing at 205. Fans seem to forget this, though, because he talks like a man two feet taller than he is. But it’s not just trash talk and hyperbole. It’s confidence and a self-assured nature that comes with being someone like Rashad Evans. His superior grappling and particularly his innate ability to find perfect balance and positioning once he has his opponent on the ground is what makes him the fighter he is. Late in the second round, Evans finally got Ortiz in a position where all was lost. Tito held on valiantly and for as long as he could, but the fight was stopped with only twelve seconds remaining in the round.

We took our leave, and the rest of our evening’s escapades are detailed here (spoiler alert: we had Philly cheese steaks and drove home).

This was my first live MMA event of any kind, and it could have gone better. I’d be remiss if I didn’t admit that I didn’t think at numerous points during the evening what a shame it is that we can’t have this in New York due to power plays, ignorance, and misunderstandings that certain State legislators have about the sport. In the meantime, though, I’m happy to make that drive, because the sport and especially the fans make it worth the extra effort.

Your loss, New York.

—————–

I woke up early during my third day in New York. Well, as early as I’m going to be awake on a Saturday morning.

Brian, who I was staying with in Manhattan, needed as much time as possible to recover from his head cold. Bearing that in mind and wanting to give him as little distraction as possible, I took to the street sans a shower and headed to find someplace to get coffee that had WiFi. This turned out to be much harder than expected. I ignored the Starbucks that jumped in front of me every two blocks and made an earnest attempt to support a smaller business. The first two I came across had every table occupied and a line near the door. I stumbled upon Oren’s Daily Roast on Lexington, which looked promising. But I discovered when I sat down with my order that there was no available WiFi. Still, the fig bar was good and the coffee was adequate. It also gave me the opportunity (or perhaps forced me to) without the self-destructive distractions that being perpetually online provides me.

Matt Hamill squares off with Alex Gustafsson

I did need to clear out my work e-mail inbox before the end of the weekend, so after an hour at Oren’s Daily Roast I finally caved in and hit a Starbucks. The first one I encountered had a hand-written note saying their Wi-Fi was down and offering their earnest, most sincere apology. I knew they meant it because it was in the handwriting, which was distinctly feminine but possessed just a hint of sloppiness. I almost went there anyway to get more writing done, but naturally there was another one two blocks up that did have working Wi-Fi. As soon as I sat down, I suddenly remembered that I never really did care much for the whole “corporate/small business” delineation, much to my shame, and spent a brief moment trying to figure out why I’d made the effort in the first place.

After a few hours had passed I returned to the apartment and an awake Brian. We ordered a proper breakfast and got a phone call from Brian’s friend Gabe, who was driving us to Philadelphia for my first ever live UFC event.

Gabe is very friendly and jovial, which isn’t quite what some would expect from a man who trained with professional head-shamshers and earns coin bouncing at clubs and pubs. It’s been my experience however, that this sort – and by that I mean bouncers and fighters, both and respectively – were rarely disagreeable people to be around. I’m sure, too, the fact that we had one of the best tickets to a major sporting event contributed in no small way to a better mood.

We arrived in Philadelphia shortly after 5:00pm. From the car window, the Philly we saw was an alien municipality boasting a disjointed skyline littered with cranes and jagged edges. I grew up in Upstate New York in a city that once was or could have been what Philly is in terms of manufacturing. It has forced the city and the region to re-examine its priorities. My hometown of Troy in particular has made great strides in the last ten years towards rebuilding a downtown essentially from scratch. For someone like me, driving through Philly and seeing the sights I saw felt like I had traveled back in time. It is exactly what I envisioned an economically viable area to be, but in 1985. I had to check my phone to make sure it was still working. Only when I was able to update my Twitter was I able to breathe easy with the knowledge that we hadn’t been sucked into a time vortex.

We pulled into what I can only describe as a vast campus of sports and entertainment complexes that included Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park, and the Wells Fargo Arena, which respectively house the NFL’s Eagles, MLB’s Phillies, and NHL’s Flyers. The area is situated in industrial South Philly. It provided, to me, an almost mystical contrast to the blue collar industrial grind. Here were not only the places where we go to relieve and/or forget the travails of our nine to fives, but they’re also situated in the most convenient space possible. It honestly filled me with a sense of wonder and a desire to get back to Philly to see, one day, a Phillies or Eagles game. Or maybe my friends Joe or Tom can convince me to forego my ignorance of hockey and actually attend a Flyers games. Stranger things have happened.

As we approached Wells Fargo we noticed that there were a lot more young teenaged girls than we anticipated. It was only when we parked that we discovered the true purpose of their sojourn: while twenty grown men sought to dispatch, submit, or outlast their opponents in an eight-sided fenced mat in front of a crowd largely composed of sweaty bros in Affliction t-shirts and their high-heeled girlfriends, twenty-two-year-old Taylor Swift was playing to a sold out crowd of screaming teenagers and their chaperones at Lincoln Financial Field. For a moment, I had a dilemma: Taylor Swift or the UFC? If there was a God, and he did love me, he wouldn’t have asked me to choose.

Kidding. Of course we still went. The tickets, after all, were free.

View from our seats.

Our hook-up came through Brian, who I was staying with in New York, and our mutual UFC contact. He’d met her through mutual work and shared objectives, and introduced me to her through e-mailed correspondence and exposure to my writings. Through this connection I had landed a (very) part-time gig writing articles for UFC.com meant to generate interest, hype fighters, and create pageviews. It wasn’t a bad gig, though the organization’s insane fight schedule this calendar year has made pinning her down for a pitch extremely difficult. The event was also my first time meeting her. Halfway through, just as my bladder started screaming bloody murder, she took a respite from what appeared to be a harrowing schedule to say hi to us. I expressed my thanks, briefly and clumsily.

When first entering a live UFC event, one can’t help but be impressed at the lengths the organization goes to. The organization definitely knows their fans and how to cater to them. There were scantily-clad women in fishnets posing for pictures with men that, despite spending more time in the gym than at their place of employment, approached with an enthusiasm that betrayed their social awkwardness. They also had the “Octagon Nation Tour,” a large mobile unit that opened up to interactive booths, rare items from the sport’s past, a chance to meet many of the fighters, and no shortage of contests and giveaways. Inside there were more tables and giveaways and contests such as a mechanism that measured the power of your punch and compared it to the sport’s best sluggers.

We took our seats and were immediately struck with how goddamn lucky we were. We had a straight on view of the cage, and sat on the same side as Dana White and the other UFC brass. Though we were actually on the first level above the floor, we had a better vantage point than most in closer seats. From my vantage point I was able to spot the unmistakable attire and build of Mickey Rourke, Charles Barkley, and more.

The celebrity component at these events is both good and bad. Certainly,it lends the sport some credibility and a reputation as a place to be seen, both of which it could desperately use. On the other hand, it has encouraged a culture similar to that of boxing, where many who acquire tickets go there to be seen and, as such, don’t show up until well into the televised portion of the evening. As a fan of the sport itself, I don’t understand the mentality of the person who isn’t there for the first fight. I’ve seen enough preliminary bouts make it to air to know that some great things happen in front of empty seats. What’s more perplexing is that tickets are relatively expensive. Why let your dollar go to waste? To me it’s like showing up to a Giants game in the fourth quarter. I just can’t wrap my head around it.

The display at the Wells Fargo Arena.

The event itself was, despite being one of the more haphazard and injury-riddled cards in recent history, a highly memorable evening. In a separate post I’ll provide my thoughts on the fights and a rundown on the event itself.

After the undersized yet immensely skilled Rashad Evans dispatched Tito Ortiz in the second round of the main event, we took our leave. We had anticipated a bit of a struggle and as such took our time getting to Gabe’s vehicle. We ran into Keith Peterson, one of the referees for the evening, who Gabe knew from around the way. That was a bit surreal.

When we approached the area where our car was and were told we had to go all the way around, our hearts sunk into our stomach. Our worst fears had been realized: the UFC and Taylor Swift contingents were departing at the exact same time. Fight geeks and emotionally desperate half-drunk juice heads were jammed into a gridlock with fourteen-year-old girls piled into their one friend’s mom’s minivan. Men discussed the likelihood of Rashad Evans being able to overcome Jon Jones’ aggression and freakish reach while cars passed by with windows adorned with Taylor Swift lyrics such as “I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you.”

After an hour and a half, we finally got out of the parking lot. We went to a place called Tony Luke’s in South Philly, surrounded by nothing except for things lesser than our destination. We ordered the cheese steak and were not disappointed. Finally, I felt like we had fulfilled a primary mission in life, which was to eat that one food in that one city that everyone says is a prerequisite if you’re a resident of the Northeast.

We got home shortly after 4:00am. We immediately went to bed with the promise that we would wake a quarter after whenever the Hell we felt like it. Marla was briefly awoken from her slumber, and Brian joined her and immediately succumbed to the travails of the trip and the day. Me, as per the usual, I stayed up later than intended. I listened to music, staring at the fuzzy haze that would be the ceiling if I had not already taken out my industrial-strength prescription contacts. I reflected on the day and things around me. I had forgotten so many of the stressors of life and just marveled at how lucky I’d been in being able to have the last twenty-four hours.

I fell asleep, my head filled with dreams of headkicks, takedowns, and the unbridled joy that would come the following day when I finally got to see my little nephew again.

James Odato has the story in today’s paper:

The reason for the technical knockout, according to officials with Ultimate Fighting Championship, the group behind competitions, is retaliation from organized labor. UFC’s officers say Unite Here, the powerful hotel workers’ union, is sending a message to owners of a string of Las Vegas hotel casinos, who own controlling interest in UFC. Brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertita. of Station Casinos, own UFC through parent company Zuffa LLC. A Las Vegas union local reached out to its New York brothers to make sure that mixed martial arts never gets to the floor the Assembly because the Fertitas run one of the largest non-union gambling enterprises in the nation, said Lawrence Epstein, UFC’s executive vice president.

“The hotel workers union are the only anti group,” he said.

Josh Gold, of the Hotel Trades Council, of which Unite Here is a member, says it has fought the legislation in Albany because the sport doesn’t offer fighters protections from “unscrupulous promoters” and “exploitive” contracts. Its opposition memo only names UFC and none of the other operators who could bring more than 100 fights to New York’s auditoriums annually. That might not be surprising given UFC is the most active industry representative pushing for the bill.

This goes against what many have insisted, which is that the blockage is merely a matter of concern over safety and culture.

——

Also, “Fight Test” is the first track of the Flaming Lips’ album “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.” This was brought to you by <a href="http://www.23houralicepeople.blogspot.com.

The New York State Senate will, today, consider a bill to sanction Mixed Martial Arts in New York State.

The full text of the bill – S1707A-2011 – is here. At a cursory glance, it doesn’t appear to be much different from previous incarnations, with all the same wording and proposals put forth, including the 8.5% tax on the gate for all events in New York State (boxing in contrast is taxed 3% on the gate).

The blog NY MMA Now is bound to have more info on this.

Bills to legalize MMA have previously passed through the Senate but been defeated once it reaches the Assembly.

UPDATE 4:20pm – The bill has passed the Senate 42-18.

Disclaimer: The original title I wrote was “Bob Reilly sells MMA Vote to the Highest Bidder,” which was misleading and unnecessarily inflammatory. After some careful consideration and discussions with others in the comments section, it’s been changed.

UPDATE Friday 5/13/2011 10:11am – Since publishing yesterday, poster “Colonie” and a handful of other mutual friends/acquaintances have reached out to me and assured that Reilly’s position is not based on any assurances or contact with Unite Here or the AFL-CIO.

—–

State Assemblyman and professional disabled persons impressionist Bob Reilly’s blockage and opposition to regulated Mixed Martial Arts in New York State is getting more nonsensical as the real reasons behind it become clearer.

Reilly recently spoke with Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com (a subsidiary of AOL Time Warner) regarding the new pre-fight insurance policy instituted by Zuffa, parent company of the UFC and the recently acquired San Jose-based Strikeforce promotion.

The new insurance policy would provide coverage for fighters that get injured while training for a fight. Zuffa, who had shopped for a company willing to provide coverage for over a year and a half, already covered fighters who were injured during the course of a fight itself.

Reilly found the timing of the policy suspect, and was critical even while praising the company for its efforts. From the article:

“I think what MMA should be doing is, instead of providing insurance for injuries, is to do away with injuries.”

When I explained to Reilly that the UFC fighters were already covered for injuries suffered in fights and the new insurance would cover injuries, suffered in or outside of the gym, while training or not for an upcoming fight, Reilly added:

“It’s certainly not a bad thing that they provide this insurance, but it really does little or nothing to solve the problem of what will happen to fighters financially, of the physical damage done to fighters or the fact that this violent sport begets violence in our society. So it does nothing to address the systemic problems of MMA.

“I think it’s a positive thing, but I don’t think it’s a positive step. In the sense that it doesn’t address the systemic problems of MMA. But it’s certainly not a negative thing.”

Reilly’s opposition is pathological, which is nothing new. The only consistency in his arguments have been his method: he’ll cite a reason for not legalizing it, then when his claims are refuted by facts, he backtracks and makes up completely new reasons. It’s maddening, but hey, that’s politics, right?

Except Reilly’s nonsensical blathering and stubborn opposition works to the detriment of New York State. MMA could bring in revenue for the State, with advocates conceding a proposed and unprecedented 8.5% tax on the gate of MMA events (boxing promotions only have to pay 3%). New York is one of only two in the entire country that hasn’t legalized MMA and is the only one with an Athletic Commission. In addition to revenue lost from major shows occurring in nearby New Jersey, estimates are that at least 70 smaller, regional shows a year (overseen by Athletic Commission regulations) would occur if the sport were legalized.

If it seems like MMA opponents like Reilly have an ulterior motive, it’s because they do.

Various sources have confirmed that the source of the blockage is a dispute between UNITE HERE, which is the parent organization a local culinary union in Las Vegas, and Zuffa owners the Fertitta brothers. The Fertittas also own Station Casinos, which are the only casinos in Las Vegas that do not have a contract with Culinary Union Local 226. Helwani, who interviewed Reilly, earlier this week uncovered a memo from UNITE HERE member the New York Hotel Trades Council outlining their opposition to MMA.

In short: MMA is being blocked because of an out-of-state labor dispute.

As for Bob Reilly? UNITE HERE has been a consistent contributor to his campaigns, the State Democratic Election Committee, the Democratic State Assembly Committee, Working Families, Inc., and in 2006 were Reilly’s second largest individual contributor.

So New York State, which more than ever needs new forms of revenue, is having a major one – almost a no-brainer – blocked because of politicians like Reilly, who sell their votes to the highest bidder. Out-of-state interests trump our State’s financial situation, if the price is right.

UPDATE 8:40pm – from the comments section:

Stephen Koepfer: Kevin, assuming this is all MMA directed lobby cash by Unite Here is a big stretch, but, let’s assume it is. What have they done done since 2008. It is 2011. Where is your evidence that they are still any kind of significant barrier in NY?

Stephen & others: this is the problem with giving me a blog and having me write blog posts during my breaks at work. Sometimes I can get carried away with my word usage, and it can be – albeit unintentionally – misread and misleading. That’s my bad, and on issues such as this I should definitely exercise more caution.

I want to make it clear though: I’m not saying it’s cash that’s given to a campaign and said “hey, here’s X thousands of dollars, don’t vote for MMA.” I am saying that Unite Here specifically has a vested interest in keeping this from the vote, and they have a champion in Bob Reilly, for whom they are a major contributor. No single organization throws that much money at a candidate for a single issue, but when they do have so much invested and such a significant portion in a candidate, they do have sway on issues that concern them.

My point isn’t that UNITE HERE paid Bob Reilly specifically to say no to MMA, but that UNITE HERE has a lot of pull with Reilly due to their significant contributions, and as such may have had a significant influence on his position.

But that’s a good question. Where HAVE they been since 2008? I wondered myself and did some digging.

In 2005 UNITE HERE created a big shake-up when they split from the AFL-CIO and joined the Change to Win Federation. After many years of doing a lot of their own lobbying and money-spending, they mended fences and re-affiliated themselves with the AFL-CIO in September 2009. Whereas in 2008 UNITE HERE in its various forms (Unite Here Tip State & Local Fund, Unite Here Tip Campaign Committee, Unite Here State & Local Fund among others) spent over $4 million on New York State campaigns, in 2010 their contributions dipped significantly: a little over $1.6 million. A lot of that money that used to come from UNITE HERE was now coming through the AFL-CIO.

Reilly was involved in a tight race in the Fall of 2010, where he was re-elected to his fourth term by a mere 542 votes. In October and November, with Reilly losing ground, the State Democratic Committee increased its fundraising efforts and the money flowed in with renewed vigor for that and other races. In those two months, the New York State AFL-CIO Cope Fund contributed a total of $31,000 to The New York State Democratic Assembly Campaign Committee. Guess how much the New York State Democratic Assembly Campaign Committee donated to Friends of Bob Reilly in those two months?

$30,000. No guff.

Jon Jones: new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, seen here with the weight of the world on his shoulders. (AP Photo/Mel Evans)

UFC 128 was last night, and the theme of the event – from Dana White’s statements throughout the week right down to Jon Jones‘s entrance music – was “boy, what a shame this is in Newark instead of Madison Square Garden.”

Unfortunately, the event paled in comparison to recent cards and even the forthcoming free Ultimate Fight Night card on Spike next week both on paper and in terms of entertainment value. Nothing was particularly bad, mind you, but nothing was particularly memorable either.

Save, of course, for the fulfillment of the Jon Jones prophecy.

Jones dominated defending champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua the entire fight, including what could generously be described as two 10-8 rounds followed by a merciful stoppage in the third. Rua came into the cage already looking tired and old, carrying with him the war-weary look that belies the fact that he’s still only 29-years-old himself. A soft mid-section and early exhaustion indicated that conditioning has once again become an issue for Rua, making a Jones victory an inevitability.

This is not to take anything away from the new champion. At 23-years-old and with only three years of fight experience, Jon Jones has ascended the Light Heavyweight ranks in dominant and impressive fashion.

However, to coin a phrase, “I was not eempressed with his performahnce.”

This will surely put me in opposition with most MMA fans, but I could hardly qualify Jones’s win as a sign that we finally have a dominant Light Heavyweight champion. Rua went into this fight looking even worse than he did against Forrest Griffin, and Jones himself has some conditioning issues that nobody else wants to acknowledge. Did anybody else see him in the last minute of the first round, pawing at Rua with an arm he was barely able to lift up, huffing and puffing in the face of a fighter who was out on his feet and practically begging to be struck with a halfway decent tap to the chin that would have finished the fight?

Granted, these issues can and will be addressed by Greg Jackson and his camp. Jackson is no fool: he, unlike many fans, knows that Jones is going to have a lot more trouble against Rashad Evans than he did against Mauricio Rua. Evans has a better wrestling pedigree and isn’t likely to be wrestled into exhaustion like Rua was. He’ll come in motivated and with knowledge of Jones’s fight game due to training with him at Team Jackson. If Jones can get past Evans and do so in easy fashion, then I’ll buy that we finally have a Light Heavyweight champion who can defend his title successfully.

Until then, I’m just going to keep watching the hype train from a distance as the distant echo of a cry from years past echoes in my brain: “the Machida era has begun!”

OTHER NOTABLE ITEMS: After his devastating loss to Brendan Schaub, Dana White announced at the post-fight press conference that Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic was done with the UFC. It would be more accurate, though, to say the UFC is done with Cro Cop. … Urijah Faber didn’t put in the dominant performance against Eddie Wineland that so many expected, but that’s due to the fans’ lack of familiarity with Wineland. I was impressed, though, with how Faber didn’t panic in the first round and turned a negative into a positive, using his losing round to figure Wineland out and adapt his game plan accordingly. A bout with Cruz is next, and rumor has it they could be the coaches for the 14th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series. … After his win, Nate Marquardt told reporters he’s mulling a move down to Welterweight. I did observe that he looked smaller last night than he has in a long time, but a cut to 170 still seems like madness and isn’t something I would advise. … Jim Miller is now on a seven fight win streak, but his C.V. is less than impressive. It’ll be interesting to see what he does against the upper echelon in the division.

Both were in town for the Senate Committee's vote on a bill to legalize MMA in New York State.

Disclaimer: yours truly is a fan of MMA and occasional contributor to UFC.com.

From staff reporter Rick Karlin:

The UFC is perhaps the largest franchise for mixed martial arts — a sport that was banned in New York under the Pataki administration, which criticized its violence.

Since, then, however, more regulations and safety precautions have been added, White said. And the sport, which can be seen on cable TV and pay-per-view has continued to grow.

Mostly though, supporters spoke of the revenue it would bring in not only to sports venues in cities from New York to Buffalo but to surrounding restaurants and hotels.

“Our New York fans are sick of traveling to Newark or Canada for sold-out shows when they could be watching their hometown favorites right here at home,” White said.

David Weinraub, one of several lobbyists working for MMA promoters, said legalizing mixed martial arts in the state could generate $50 million in economic activity, including $5 million in tax revenues. He said promoters would agree to an 8 percent “gate tax” on event tickets, a full 5 points more than boxing events currently charge.

Read more here

I found out about the existence of this article by someone at the TU linking me to it directly. I poked around for the site for several minutes while on my first break earlier today and could not find mention of it anywhere.

I’m on my second and still can’t find it, which is a shame. It’s an issue that warrants coverage, particularly in the Sports section, although this instead fell under the jurisdiction of the TU’s political coverage. Edit 11:11am – after me making a stink all morning through Twitter, Facebook and everywhere in-between, it’s finally on the home page.

The Albany Times Union, like so many other print outlets, are looking for ways to engage and acquire new readership. They’re willing to do it through various means, such as multi-media presentations and SEEN photos of everything from Northern Lights concerts to pre and post-riot drinking & debauchery on Hudson Street. But apparently not through MMA coverage.

Which is and isn’t surprising. It is surprising because any visit to Buffalo Wild Wings, Jillian’s, or any other place that becomes packed for even the lowest rung of pay-per-view shows would tell you that there’s a market for it. On the other hand, it’s not surprising given that despite its growth in popularity in the mainstream and dramatic rules changes since the New Jersey Athletic Commission drafted the universally adopted Unified Rules of MMA in 1997, the sport still has a very negative stigma attached to it, particularly by those at the editorial level whose feet don’t hit the pavement very often.

It’s just frustrating to see when an outlet like the Times Union makes the right moves (for example finally terminating the leases on bureaus whose necessity was effectively nullified by the existence of cellphones and laptops over a decade ago) in some areas and move so slowly in others.

If the Albany Times Union was smart, they’d have someone covering MMA as a beat, and they would have made mention of Dana White’s visit (along with UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Matt Hamill) on the site’s front page.

Instead, I have to rely on a desperate game of phone tag and shouts on Facebook to get one of its staffers to let me know if there’s going to be coverage for the visit of a household name and huge media figure (not to mention biggest sports figure since the Giants left town), let alone where that coverage is.

It’s 2011. New York, time to join the over forty states with Athletic Commissions in legalizing MMA. And Times Union, it’s time to start covering that sport that has more fans than you have readers.

UFC President Dana White is in Albany today to meet with legislators and promote the sport in an attempt to get it legalized in New York State.

White is joined by MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pioneer Renzo Gracie, UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar, and Utica resident and UFC middleweight contender Matt Hamill (who despite being deaf from birth has been a contender in two different weight classes).

At 3:00pm, all will be present at the Albany Armory to address the media and present a technique clinic for area students and others.

This marks the first time to my knowledge that the UFC has been a presence in the area. In recent years the sport has gone from niche interest to explode into the mainstream, generating millions in pay-per-view buys and becoming one of the top sports in the country.

MMA’s primary opposition in New York State is longtime New York State legislator Bob Reilly, who has used his position on the State Tourism & Gaming Committee to block MMA at all passes. His confounding statements against the sport have continued despite facts to the contrary, and who also thinks boxing itself has gotten too violent.

Unfortunately, since I work a 9 to 5 and also receive money as an occasional contributor to UFC.com, I can’t be present to provide coverage as media. I urged the Times Union yesterday to send a representative to cover the event, but have yet to hear back as to whether or not that’s going to happen. The impression I was given is that it didn’t seem likely, which is a real shame since it’s rare a sports figure as prominent as White visits the area, especially on the heels of UFC’s acquisition of Strikeforce this past weekend, which further tightened the vice clamp the UFC has on MMA in North America. Hopefully they’ve reconsidered.

The Press Release provided by the UFC is after the cut.

Its surging popularity has made it a coveted attraction for local officials and arena owners around the globe, and it is currently regulated in 44 of the 48 states that have athletic commissions. A study commissioned by UFC® showed that regulation in New York would generate roughly $23 million in economic activity across the state.

Zuffa – the parent company of Ultimate Fighting Championships – has purchased its primary rival in North America, the San Jose based fighting promotion Strikeforce.

According to a twenty-minute interview with MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, the deal happened very quickly and was finalized just this morning. Rather than immediate absorption, White says that Strikeforce is going to run “business as usual” and that head honcho Scott Coker has also been acquired to maintain his dealings with the promotion.

White is scheduled to be in Albany, NY next week to meet with lawmakers to try to get MMA legalized in New York State, one of only a few left in the nation with an Athletic Commission that prohibits the sport.

White acknowledged that Strikeforce was providing a product that has an enthusiastic fanbase, but cites the primary reason of the purchase as the UFC’s forthcoming international expansion.

“We need more fights,” he told Helwani.

The “business as usual” line was emphasized by White, indicating that much like when Zuffa acquired WEC, the promotion will continue to run its own shows under its own banner on Showtime. He did, however, indicate that there will be some UFC fighters sent over to the promotion.

It isn’t clear yet what this means for fighters like Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko, although White assured Helwani that all Strikeforce fight contracts would be honored and that they did acquire all fighters currently under contract with Strikeforce.

As far as Strikeforce’s fading draw Fedor Emelianenko and his unique deal, White did make a distinction between Fedor’s deal with Strikeforce and the partnership between his management team M-1 Global and Showtime, an issue mired in complications. Emelianenko is currently on a two-fight losing streak, and in the past Strikeforce has run into problems with M-1 Global’s pathological renegotiation tactics after Fedor’s fights.

Strikeforce’s extensive tape library was also acquired by Zuffa.

There are a lot of concerns and criticisms that are bound to arise from the news, but the biggest might be the future of women’s fighting. White in the past has been very (some say overly) unreceptive to the idea of women’s fights, and re-iterated his stance in his interview today with Ariel Helwani.

“Can you do some fights here and there? Yeah,” White says, “but not enough to create a good division.”

While such a statement does not bode well for women’s fighting, White did say that all contracts – including those with female fighters – will be honored. While that means Cyborg Santos isn’t likely to go anywhere anytime soon, it’s also unclear if the women’s divisions will be expanded and/or promoted in the future.
