-or- THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T SEE SHIT HERE NO MORE

You’ll notice that this blog has been…well, sparse as of late. Mostly I just use it to remind people that I’ll be performing stand-up comedy, such as TOMORROW NIGHT!

Boo-yah! Gotcha. You can’t escape that shit. I’m too quick. I’m like a self-promoting comedy cat, springing out at you when you least expect it. You are a mouse in my jaws. Come out tomorrow night or I’ll tear you apart.

Anyway, here’s everything I’ve been working on, since people keep asking me to send them the links of the stuff I’ve been writing as if I somehow don’t have all this fucking work to do and because they can’t use Google, or poke around Spike.com for five minutes. I’m not bitter, honest. I’m just really hot in this office and cranky and on the man rag.

Also, if you’re on Tumblr, take a peak at KEVIN MARSHALL vs. THE INTERNET, which is for all intents and purposes my main blog now.

Also, do you follow the All Access Weekly and Spike TV Tumblr blogs? If you do, THAT’S ME, SUCKAS! Surprise again!

So here’s the articles. Please note that this doesn’t include stuff like me covering the releases of the iPad Mini, Call of Duty, Halo 4, etcetera and so on that are more time-specific/spec listings.

There’s just times where I feel like comedy doesn’t like me.

Well, okay, there’s times where I feel like people in general don’t like me. A lot of that is probably residual self-loathing and leftover chubby kid insecurity, because I am told otherwise without provocation at certain performances. Not all – not the ones where I don’t feel great about what I’ve done so I’ll duck out. But most. I don’t go fishing for compliments, so that when I do get them, I feel it’s genuine.

Which is probably a weird thing for a comedian to say. After all, isn’t trying to make people laugh just a way to get the approval of strangers? Isn’t that a strange, vampiric and dependent relationship one develops with the audience? I suppose it can be. But honestly, I don’t care about people laughing, I care about being funny, if that makes any sense. Like, I’ve felt better about shows where the laughter was more reserved than ones where it was loud and boisterous.

I don’t know, because I’m fucking weird, okay?

Anyway, I’m performing tonight at The Mine (388 Broadway, Saratoga Springs NY) as part of a gaggle of local comics starting at 8pm. Good friend and good comedian Ethan Ullman (host of Alternative to Sleeping) is hosting. So come check it out. There’ll be a lot of new material, I think some of it incendiary depending on the make-up of the crowd.

Also, did I mention I’ve taken over the Tumblr account for Spike TV? I think I mentioned it over on the MMA blog, not sure if I did here or not. Either way, follow it and my work for the Tumblr for All Access Weekly.

Strikeforce Bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey went on TapOut radio and chastised UFC ring girls for their playboy spreads, but then went and did her own nude spread, albeit subjectively more tasteful, for ESPN’s annual “The Body” issue. In response, Meisha Tate called her a hypocrite.

A lot of people dismissed it as sour grapes, but I found the argument intriguing enough to write about it for Spike:

She took her shot by framing it in the context of criticism that Rousey herself levied against the UFC’s ring girls for appearing in Playboy during her recent appearance on TapOut radio:

“With all these ring girls and their vaginas, – all of this goes back to advice my mom gave me. She gave me this one piece of advice, which I still hold dear. She said, ‘Look, whatever pictures you put out there are gonna be out there forever, so just think that one day your 12 or 13-year-old son or daughter is going to see those pictures. Whatever you want your son or daughter, or even your 13-year-old little sister to see, keep that in mind.’ So, whatever I’m not gonna show on a beach, I’m not gonna show in a magazine. These girls are going to have to explain to their kids one day why mommy’s ass and vagina are all over the place.
Tate’s resentments aside, how does one reconcile Rousey’s criticism of ring card girls posing for Playboy and her appearance and subsequent star turn in ESPN: The Magazine?

Read more over at Spike’s MMA Uncensored Live blog.

In short: myself, I’m practically a hedonist. I don’t have a moral judgement to make on either spread; in fact, it seems to be Rousey that’s making that determination. My argument, though, is that the line between her spread and the UFC ring girls in Playboy is a cynical and somewhat arbitrary, especially when you take into account ESPN’s motives behind their annual issue (hint: they’re not selling it on art). I’m convinced Rousey like many others think there’s a big difference, but I’m not so sure there is and don’t think she or anyone can fault ring girls or anyone else for posing for one magazine simply because they faced the camera head-on.

Give it a read, though, and lemme know your thoughts.

Hey everyone!

Firstly, some big news: I’ve joined the ranks of Viacom (kinda) and will now be blogging for Spike TV’s new MMA blog. It’ll go live, and the first post will be up, later today.

Also, tonight is Star Boxing’s second foray into promoting boxing at the Times Union Center in Albany. As an added bonus, they’ll be broadcasting live on ESPN2 for Friday Night Fights. I’ll be providing live, round by round coverage of it over on the Mixed Marshall Arts blog.

Is that it for now? I think that’s it for now. My ribs still hurt but they’ve gotten noticeably better over the last twenty-four hours.

I lost, and badly, in the first round by TKO. That put me in a depressive state for a couple days. But god DAMN was it fun. Hats off to my opponent, Josh Beretz, to whom I was all like “come at me, bro” and holy shit did he ever.

The right side of my jaw is still sore and my side still kills me every time I move thanks to a solid front kick. Nothing broken, just bruised. Only thing that hurts more is my pride and the disappointment I felt in the outcome. I’m putting on a good face but it’s fucking killing me that I didn’t and couldn’t do more. Nice guys, all involved, including the other fighters who were nothing but great before and after the fight. But FUCK I wanted to win. I recognize a big part of this are my own character flaws. I hate that I lost and that I didn’t go out on my shield. I feel ashamed that a fight was stopped and I was able to simply walk away from it. And there’s nothing anyone can say, despite their earnestness, that can convince or make me feel otherwise. I know just from viewing and knowing about combat sports that I shouldn’t feel that way, but I do, for better or worse.

But, again, god DAMN did I love it. The whole experience. Right up to and including getting owned by a vastly superior opponent and getting my bell rung. It was walking away, and every step I’ve taken afterwards, that is killing me. That shame, and the depression, is fading. Slowly. Very, very slowly. But I don’t regret a goddamn second and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Anyways. Thanks to Shannon Miller and Shawn Miller for prepping me the last few weeks. Kudos as well to Ed Kinner who made me privy to some more techniques the day of the fight. Also to Ryan Thompson and Kyle Spiak for cornering and Cage Wars for hosting the damn thing.

For a much more competitive (and damn good) fight, check out the main event title match after the jump.

A lot is going through my head right now in the wake of Junior Seau’s suicide. If you’re a fan of sports, I’m sure a lot is going through yours as well. If not, then it should be. This should be giving everyone from the front offices to the bleachers pause and cause for concern, particularly in the NFL where the suicide rate among former players is nearly six times(!) the national average.

The links between concussions, CTE/TBI, depression, and suicide are far from “inconclusive” and it’s not tasteless nor is it irresponsible to bring it up. The only uncertainty is the vague metaphysical notion of universal uncertainty; the kind that people apply when they want to dismiss an argument because they’d prefer not hear it or don’t have the emotional or intellectual maturity to participate in the discussion. There’s no avoiding it: Seau killed himself, but before he did it, concussions killed Seau.

Red more over at the Mixed Marshall Arts blog
