80s Metal Music Video of the Week
Judas Priest – “Breaking the Law”

Lately I’ve been on a big Priest kick, although much of it is focused on their earlier stuff from the mid to late seventies. There’s just something I love about the gothic ambience they set with their arrangements, which I think mesh well with what many others think of as questionable production and mixing.
What I do like about this video, though, is that it exemplifies what made them so great. They were so freaking metal, but at the same time you didn’t feel like they walked around all day so freaking serious about it. Metal acts can often slip into self-parody with either their pretension or cornball over-the-top presentation (musically and visually). While Halford and company were prone to their own theatrics, they knew exactly where the line was and danced on it artfully.
And the cover for “Sad Wings of Destiny” is probably my favorite of all time.

Am I the only one who went through the 80’s not realizing Rob Halford was gay? Not that it matters, but I didn’t know till like last year. There’s a Priest joke in there somewhere….
Well, he only came out a few years ago.
But there’s Metal Leather, and there’s Biker from the Village People Leather.
Halford always looked more like the latter.
