Kevin Marshall's America
Greatest Lead of All Time
A story today by reporter Tim O’Brien has a lead so epic, it demands special attention.
A good lead is like a first impression. You need to do it right, as it sets the tone for the rest of the conversation. The same goes for literature: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” In addition to being damn near poetic, it also sets the tone for Dickens’s Tale of Two Cities.
Bump that Victorian noise. Because now we have:
He calls himself Mr. Poop.
Thank you, Tim. And God bless America.

I maintain that this is one of the greatest ledes in TU history, but only if you keep going into paragraph two. Because.

Jimmy Vielkind is a poet himself. But Shel Silverstein is no Mr. Poop.
And only Rob Madeo is Mr. Dog Poop.
This whole post is making me think of the South Park episode from this past season in which Morgan Freeman reads aloud a literary work by Butters. I can hear it now.
