The Hair Ring. Uhhhh… (via @buzzfeed)
“It’s impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror… Horror has a face… and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared.”
- Marlon Brando as Kurtz, “Apocalypse Now”

They Might Be Giants: Birdhouse In Your Soul (Live on The Tonight Show 4/3/1990)
Accompanied by Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band. I seriously get the chills when Doc Severinsen plays the trumpet solo. Great stuff.
Seriously. That trumpet solo. I should get a trumpet again.
Things that cheer me up.
Reblogging to watch later since I can’t right now
Well, DC did it. They announced Before Watchmen this morning. This just reeks of bad, bad, bad idea. With no involvement from Alan Moore, these are stories that just shouldn’t be told. [Pic from CBR]
Really bummed at some of the names involved in this. I’m certain there will be a litany of excuses and no shortage of cries of “double standards” from the participants. But this just smells wrong.
On an unrelated subject on Google+, I’d noted that in any entertainment industry, once you’re in the door it’s actually easy to be successful and stay that way. The hard part is doing so with dignity and maintaining some semblance of artistic integrity; doing only what you think is quality and what you think is right. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to make lemon out of lemonade, i.e. when you’re given the opportunity to work on a less than desirable project. But it also means you don’t jump on board with something like this. Ever. Because what the fuck is the point of success in a field if it doesn’t have substance and it’s aiding in pretty much destroying something that you strive for?

I’m sure that most folks know by now that Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a breast cancer charity and advocacy organization, announced that they were cutting funding to Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings. In the last five years, the money from Komen allowed PP to…
Is anybody else tired of this cowardice?
Was there ever a time before when organizations doing a greater good didn’t let themselves get bullied by fringe politics and cave to the worst aspects of our culture, in other words those that oppose their way? I’m not sure. But that time should be now, and Komen, you’ve let yourselves and everybody else down.
Could I write a clumsier headline? Fuck you, I do this for free.
Chuck Schumer and New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen have made a friendly wager on the outcome of this Sunday’s BIG FOOTBALL GAME! Sources tell me that big game is either the Super Bowl or the Chelsea/Man U game the Fox Network is airing live at 10:30am (seriously).
Anyway, here’s the bet, courtesy The Troy Record And Its Terrible Website with Cluttered Design and Pop-Unders:
Schumer and New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen have placed their own friendly wager on the game, with each agreeing to buy the other cases of craft beer from their respective states should their team face defeat. The brews will be shared among the entire Senate, with enough for each member to enjoy.
Shaheen announced she would send beer from New Hampshire-based Smuttynose Brewing Co. in the event of a Patriots loss, while Schumer will split his loyalties among six different Empire State craft breweries should the Giants stumble Sunday, including Troy’s own Brown’s Brewing Co.
There’s other breweries, but they’re outside of Troy so who cares? TROY WHAT!
Thanks to Vic Christopher for tweeting about this.
Debate about minimum wage in New York State has been renewed and it’s likely to be a hot button issue in the next legislative session.
Kristi Barlette, the Times Union’s Features Editor, weekly columnist, and blogger of important topics like such as pictures of anonymous butts on the subway and questionairre memes, tweeted her thoughts on the matter this morning:
Naturally, this purely anecdotal, out-of-context dismissal of the opposition to her views rubbed more than a few people the wrong way…

Every time.
There’s actually a reason cats do this (and I’m only sharing because I see a lot of memes about it lately with no mention of it).
For the same reason that cats will gravitate towards your guest who is not a cat person, your cat is more likely to come and show affection when you are ignoring them or otherwise preoccupied. It has to do with how cats perceive body language. In nature, a cat will show another cat it is friendly, non-aggressive, and/or means no harm by turning away or not looking at the cat.
So when a cat walks into a room and sees you not making eye contact or acknowledging it, it actually perceives that as welcoming and warm.
They are like creatures from Bizarro World, in other words.

Annnnnd the new single from Adam Arcuragi and the Lupine Chorale Society.
Look, I hate this video. Bland, pretty hipsters with no charisma having a dress-up party and overall being very pleased with their own ability to consume and exist. But the song is fucking great, and I need to grab this album post-haste. You do too.

Double shot of videos.
First, something a friend of mine posted in Google + made me think of this. Song is “California” by Wax. From ‘95.
Dr. Ellie Sattler appreciation post.
One of the biggest reasons I love Jurassic Park so much is because of this bad bitch right here. In the book she’s a bit of a wallflower, but in the movie she don’t take no shit from no dinosaurs. Raptor’s chasing her? She pulls some parkour shit, jumps over some trees and basically doesn’t give an eff. Oh, a triceratops is sick? She’ll just stick her hands in a giant pile of poo and generally save the day, all while looking fabulous in her blouse and khaki shorts.
While the dudes are getting their legs broken or being eaten, this classy badass is busy saving lives and kicking ass.
You go, Ellie. You go.
Yeah, pretty much every character in that movie is far more likable and fleshed out than in the book. Crichton is…not good with people.
