In addition to his dashing good looks, my nephew Joseph Gino has another thing in common with yours truly: three older sisters.

Being the youngest of five (four in his case) isn’t easy. It isn’t any easier when you are overpowered in terms of gender 3 to 1. Sure, I had an older brother, but by the time my memory and identity had formed, he was a teenager fully engrossed in things like girls and skateboarding and hardcore music. I was left to fend for myself against three older sisters who amused themselves with various hobbies like “pin the blame on the baby” and writing “spank me” on my diaper.

And after only eight weeks, poor Baby Joey got a taste of it himself after his twin sisters’ First Communion ceremony.

Older sisters are mean, you guys.

Joey will look back on this picture as the penultimate representation of his relationship with his sisters. But don’t worry, kid, because if you stick it out then you too can one day rise above it to become an unpaid blogger that becomes the #1 enemy of Alive at Five enthusiasts and yelled at on Twitter for being a bad journalist even though you’re not a journalist.

After the jump: the nieces’ christening First Communion. Edit – As I noted above, it wasn’t their christening obviously, it was their First Communion (info). All this Catholic Church stuff the last few weeks is confusing me!

“Don’t drop it don’t drop it don’t drop it don’t drop it don’t drop it don’t drop it…”

Oh, yes. Little angels they are.

  2. Megan says:

We need a self-help group I think. I have two older sisters – quite enough. To this day they can’t resist giving me a hard time about anything and everything. My son also has two older sisters and my sympathy.

I wonder who will hate you for writing about *this*?

    • @Joe – True fact, “Aunt Megan” above (my sister) taught me how to throw a punch.

@the_exile – With my luck and Irish Catholic family? Someone will find a reason, I’m sure. :)

  4. Ellie says:

I am an older sister. I would like to be thanked for all the hard work I did in raising my sister, like throwing her in water to teach her how to swim and teaching her the love of sci fi by forcing her to watch Star Trek with me.

I play the role of older sister to my brother, who is 10 years younger than I am. I can definitely say that I torture him more than he ever tortures me.

About a month or so ago he fell asleep on the couch… I wrote “Daddy’s Girl” on his lower back. What? I told him about it before he went anywhere!

  6. Maureen says:

My husband’s older sisters used to beat him up. Until one day he was big enough to beat them up. They still talk about it.

  7. Amanda Talar says:

I love his face in the picture. It’s like he’s saying “Can you believe this?!”

Aww, the girls look so precious!

Off-topic and slightly odd: white gloves are so chic.

  8. Wendy V says:

I am also an older sister. Part of teaching my sisters how to “make it in the world” included wringing a dirty mop out on my middle sister’s head during a fight, ratting her out to Mom and the Principal when she skipped school, teaching my youngest sister how to use the microwave when she was 2 (I was a lazy 16-year old who did not want to get out of bed to make her breakfast), and instructing “the baby” on the filthiest curse words to use in front of Mom & Dad.

And now I am continuing the instruction with my middle sisters’ two boys (3 and 1), who I am grooming to become the destructive hellions that my PITA sister so richly deserves.

Very cute – I see that picture going in senior yearbook! Of course, it’s already out there on the internet…..poor kid.

  10. Cute~Ella says:

Big sisters make you stronger. I think I’ll make your nephew a onesie that says so!

And your niece totally looks like she’s plotting and scheming in that second picture and not praying. I love it.

  11. Good little Catholic girls are the ones you need to look out for. I’ve ALWAYS said that! LOL!

As the little sister to three older brothers – let me tell you – you may have had it easier!! LOL!
