Last night I was bombarded with Tweets and Facebook status updates about the fact about someone named Puck singing the KISS song “Beth” on last night’s “Glee.”

After gleaning that it wasn’t the same Puck from “The Real World: San Francisco” singing the song (which would have been great television), I resumed my usual confusion over the popularity of this show. I also had no idea so many people loved the song “Beth,” which is a really touching song about how a guy tells his girlfriend in the sweetest way possible to go to Hell and leave him alone because he has to practice painting cat whiskers on his face.

If “Glee” really wanted to impress me, one of the characters would have sung “Let’s Put the X in Sex.” Warning: this is what I’d call “80s NSFW,” meaning there’s no nudity or anything but there is some suggestive body language that would’ve had your parents turn off MTV.

I have no idea what the Hell Paul is trying to do in this video, but I love it, in particular what he does after jumping into the shot at the 1:10 mark. It makes me laugh every time. Then you have the irregular hip movements that aren’t gyrations so much as sudden juts, and the signaling of the “X.” What’s even better is the juxtaposition with Gene Simmons and guitarist Bruce Kulick, who look like two guys that lost a bet.

It’s all freaking brilliant, and it would’ve lent itself wonderfully to the show.

But no. Instead they went with “Beth.”

Cowards.

Well, they did do a reasonably rowdy “Shout It Out Loud,” too. Would they get a couple of points for that?

  2. Will King says:

I don’t like the song “Beth” because it’s ‘really touching’, I like it because of the whole set up of the song, the intruments and the singing itself.

It was a very good performance of the song is all.

Also, just be happy there is an original show doing well on TV. With all the reality crap out there and re-tread you’d think you would be happy with an original idea.

  3. Will King says:

    Um…yeah…totally knew that.

I’d be an idiot if I didn’t, right?

    I’m gonna be quiet now.

  4. Perish the thought, Will. If you were quiet, I’d stop writing this blog and Tweeting.

By the way, I still maintain there’s a lot of other good, original, quality programming out there (Community, Parks & Recreation, 30 Rock, Caprica, Treme to name a few). We just don’t have the time to find it all unfortunately.

Well there’s only 9123475120934750923874 stations on TV now, I don’t know how it’s so hard to find anything!

And this is unrelated, but you tweeted yesterday about the DVR on Time Warner, I did think of something I don’t like about it.

You can’t record more than 2 things at any one time AND you have to be watching one of the 2 things you are DVRing. That would be something I don’t like about my DVR.

Hands down, Community was one of the funniest half hours weekly on network television!

  7. Will – I keep hearing and reading nightmare stories about it. And to think they everyone was sounding the death knell of Tivo. But seriously, I hope for their and their subscribers’ sake they get these issues resolved soon.

Ellie – I love that show to death. The Senor Chang and Abed characters is nothing short of a work of art.

  8. BL says:

I love Glee, but if I didn’t see the first season, I wouldn’t love it. The introductions of the main characters were much funnier and oddball.
