Someone just pointed out to me (via a blog post) that New York City doesn’t have telephone polls. I’d always been aware, but never conscious of this. My mind is blown in a way that’s almost embarrassing.

Look. No telephone poles. NONE! NOT ONE.

For a moment, I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that there are populated first-world cities that didn’t have telephone poles. I mean, I just can’t imagine living in a place without telephones. How do they get electricity? What else do they look at and go “one of these days I’m going to climb one of those things” but never follow through on it? Where are your power and empty promises, Manhattan?

Anyway, welcome back, State Workers! My blog missed your traffic. I hope you had a good day off.

Me? I slept in, caught up on Jason Aaron’s Scalped (a fantastic comic series published by DC Vertigo with a storytelling structure that fills me with both wonder and seething jealousy) while listening to Calexico, then went to visit my oldest sister and played with my adorable nephew while she took time to herself to take a shower without being rushed and go about some other things.

Joey sleeps.

Joey, the baby, is such a joy. He barely fussed. We sat down, he babbled at me, then he babbled at the dog. He laughed, I walked around with him in my arms, and it brought me such a joy that everything else just disappeared. I stayed until he fell asleep, then took my leave.

It’s good for me to take the time out for those brief respites. With family, no matter where or what situation they’re in, I feel content and don’t question whether or not I belong.

Later I was part of another episode of MANville with local boy and MMA fighter Jay White as guest. We also ranted about rotaries in this area among other things.

’twas a good day off. What’d you do on yours?

Oh, and get another brief respite from the work week: join us on Thursday!

Went to lunch w/ the daughter…..went back home…complained about how the air isn’t working good enough in the house….took a nap, wrote a blog complaining about how the air isn’t working good enough. Went to bed….complaining how the air isn’t working good enough.

I hate telephone polls, mang! Luckily I have an ugly alley for those ugly things to be strewn about in so I don’t have to look at them much:)

Isn’t it the best? I got to spend time with our newest member of the family – Izzy (Isabella) is almost 4 months and she’s the best cuddler in the world.

    Joey lookin’ for a girlfriend?

They run the phone / cable wires underground. This is common in large cities. My little Clifton Park neighborhood also has grounded wires.

Hi Kev, this state worker is glad to be back, and spend my break reading your blog. :-) Glad to hear we give your blog alot of traffic.
Gotta question off topic: is the editor away on vacation?… that picture of the boy on the front page of the TU, and the website- with the phallic yellow..whatever, etc… is it just me who thinks this pic wasn’t ‘thought through’ before being used? Just wondering!

You let your sister take a shower by herself while you watched her kids??

You are truly made of awesome.

No telephone polls in NYC — check out the blizzard of 1888 and you’ll understand why. That and there are just way too many people that would not enjoy them like you do.

“Anyway, welcome back, State Workers! My blog missed your traffic. I hope you had a good day off.” Hey, I was here! What are you insinuating? ;)

Ah, Joey’s a sweetie — and so are you to give your sister the luxury of the unrushed shower. You’ve no idea how hard that is for a new mom and how rare the person is who will do that because they fear the diaper. That’s the catch with babies. They can go from burbling happily one moment to screaming at the top of their lungs the next until you figure out what’s wrong and fix it. (You would too if you had no other means of communication.) The only way you could have topped this would have been also to give her a nap but she probably took one with Joey.

Meh, on the phone poles, dude. This is 2010. There are cell towers on the top of at least some of those buildings in addition to the underground cables.
