Hard Labor: Tell Us What You Did on Vacation and Stop Crying About Summer Ending
Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend!
This is the part where I ruminate over the meaning of the holiday. In one aspect, it’s supposed to give recognition to all the cogs in the machine that keep this country ticking; those great men and women that toil, bleed, sweat and ache over the things we often forget. It’s for those that spend eight plus hours doing everything but what they’d rather be doing, then go home to a noisy family, or an absent spouse, or a bowl of cereal and Netflix on demand, etcetera and so on.
The big thing for most people, though, is that it signals the end of the Summer. Which I suppose is a sad notion for those that still live and operate in a High School mentality; the ones who can’t shake themselves of the “beginning of the school year” blues even though they’re no longer in school and talk about the best days of their lives in the past tense. Well I don’t do that. Because, you see, this is Kevin Marshall: In the Present Tense. NOW you get it!
Anyway, I had a good Summer, but I like Fall so I can’t get too sad and weepy over Summer’s passing. Besides, football’s about to start, and college hockey, and other things too numerous to mention.
I guess what I’m saying is shut up already about Summer ending. There’s still plenty of living to be had in the cool, crisp Autumn air. Besides, it’s better weather for running.
As for the three-day weekend that the holiday afforded me, I had some great times! I celebrated a friend’s birthday with some karaoke at a gay bar, took video footage of half-naked tattooed chicks, had a visit from an old college friend who passed out on my couch watching “Futurama,” went apple picking, saw family and slept in. You really can’t ask much more from a three-day weekend.
What’d y’all do on your Labor Day vacation? Let us know in the comments.
And so help me God, if one of you uses the word “staycation” I’m going to track you down and punch you square in the nose.

I went out to Massachusetts for a family wedding and my niece’s 1st birthday party. Both events were outside and we got really lucky with the weather — the edge of Hurricane Earl passed by the night before. And then I came back Sunday night with just enough time to turn Monday into a little bit of a staycation (go ahead, you know where I live, do it, I dare you). Went for dim sum, got some things accomplished that I had needed to do, and partook a little bit of Center Square stooping to cap off the night.
Got up, ate breakfast…laid back down…went to the movies…came home….passed out on couch..wnet to bed…livin’ the dream.
Thank God summer IS over….can I stop sweating now?
Did a lot of cleaning, did some photo trips through the Capital District to take pictures with some efke black-and-white slide film, which I just dropped off at the developers this morning.
I smote Philistines by the bushel with my rapier wit. It’s a good kind of tired.
We had a cookout with good friends…I loveeeeeeeeeeeeee Fall, watching football on weekends.Summers are to darn hot & humid here in Virginia! Gimme that cool, crisp air anytime!
I picked apples! And made pies… like 6 pies.
I spent time at Woodbury Commons with my mom in an ill advised shopping trip, I spent 4 hours doing laundry because some grrrrr inducing woman took 12+ washers up at the laundromat, and I spent 4 hours doing tech support stuff for my mom to get her new computer set up to her liking.
I’m finding today at work to be relaxing.
“High school mentality” got nothin’ to do with it. When you have kids that are heading back to school, it’s as much of a bummer for the parents as the kids. Homework, catching the bus, school events, sports schedules, all packed into increasingly shorter days….the end of summer means more work for everyone, and that my friend, makes me SAD!! :(
What a great weekend! Got to spend time with family and took full advantage of an early morning 21 mile bike ride on Monday. There was no traffic and the weather was perfect. Lastly, finished up things around the house to get ready for our family’s new addition coming somewhere around Sept 18th.
Mmmmm, I did the same things I do everyday – 365 days a year :)
Tired of sweating too.
Bring me some cool. Oh wait, I bring the cool with me, right?
