Ted Williams, out of the booth and into the care of professionals.

After mounds of coverage and a tumultuous week that included an assault from his daughter and suspicions he had resumed drinking, Battle Plan Promotions – the company that had been managing Ted Williams’ recent interviews and voiceover gigs – has decided to pull him out of the spotlight and get him into a 12-step rehabilitation program.

After consulting with several psychologist and doctors we all agree that it’s time to allow private healing to take place. Ted would like to express his sincere thanks for all the love and support he has received.

It’s the right move.

The attention Ted received as a result of the viral video and mainstream interest in his story reminded me of what I once learned about people that are near starvation: that if you suddenly give them food and water and don’t closely monitor their intake, their body won’t be able to process it and they’ll essentially eat themselves to death.

In much the same way, Ted had gained some semblance of stability, but at a great cost. All of those things that he had before his fall from the industry were all suddenly thrust on him, and then some. Anybody who has battled their demosn will tell you that’s overwhelming in and of itself, but to have to do so on a very public stage is nigh insurmountable.

Me? I’m an optimist, and I think he’ll come out of this okay. It’s possible to overcome situations like his; I’ve seen it happen.

And I can’t help but feel sorry for those that have so little life experience and character that they would take enjoyment in Ted’s perceived failure this week.

I agree! This was all so much and so fast. All the media coverage and then reuniting with this family. I think he should slow down heal and then he can conquer all the new things in his life.

  2. jhooper says:

    ted,

Dont give up keep fighting the addiction

    hoop

  3. jakester says:

Yeah, God help you get by this… and out the other side of the tunnel.

  4. Chuck Miller says:

Why do I have this very very bad feeling that there’s going to be a new deep-voiced resident at Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab?

  5. Zenobia says:

I feel Dr. Phil was wrong. I don’t value his opinion and he need to be taken off the air. I sad when you can not be happy for people, Dr. Phil why are you trying to hurt Ted Williams?

  6. MomAtwork says:

@5: I totally agree with you. I was trapped at the doctor’s the other day watching Dr. Phil and I could not believe how much he hounded this poor man. All I could think about was as much as Dr. P was ranting about the “15 minutes of fame” was that obviously, Dr. P was trying to ride the coattails of that 15 minutes. I hope Ted Williams can continue to win his battle over addiction and in the future, stay away from Dr. Phil!

  7. I haven’t seen the episode you’re both referring to, so I can’t comment on its approach.

I do, however, find myself continually questioning the ethics of a “Doctor” inferring he’s benefitting guests through televised treatment when he is, essentially, compartmentalizing illnesses and engaging in ambush tactics to score points for entertainment value.

Even if he is occasionally right, stuff like that does more harm than good and only adds to the misconceptions and stigmas behind alcoholism, addiction, and mental illness.

  8. Jeff says:

There was a reason he was homeless and panhandling. I hope he keeps it together. Most of the homeless are so because of various drug addictions and/or mental disorders.

  9. CJ says:

I AGEE WITH EVERYONE ELSE GIVE THIS MAN A CHANCE. TOO MUCH TOO FAST FOR HIME, HE NEEDS TIME!!!!

  10. crabby old emily says:

How long did this take? A week?
Actually Its a relief that he figured it out before he went over the edge-no thanks to the networks-what were people thinking?
Dr Phil is a charlatan-shame on you Oprah.

  11. Yabetcha says:

Felt sad for the man. It seems to me this “Battle Plan Promotions” guy–Al Battle, was shoving him along first to one gig then to the next to line his OWN pockets…Ted’s announcing voice was even growing weak and unremarkable due to Battle’s greed. Then I felt that Mom probably had more than enough with the sneaky, snakey ways of an addict, but she seemed like a tall glass of cold water–in his FACE! His kids are codependents, willing to help good old pop out with more bottles of wine and beer. And Ted was willing to lie (and privately with his daughter, to rage) and rethink everything he was going to say to see if it would benefit the addict! Too soon for him to get together with his oh-so-loved clan, Dr. Phil, in front of the ENTIRE AMERICAN PUBLIC? WHY put him on the toilet in front of the entire country? What good was it that we be voyeurs to his life of dereliction? I too, think there is something valuable worth saving about the man…I would just like to see him ‘straight’ and ‘real’. I’ll bet I’d like what I’d see.

  12. jgray says:

I think Ted should be allowed to work and have counselor sidekick – his own personal just like Oprah has a personal trainer for her weight problem, Ted could have a personal canselor for his drug/alcohol problem. That way he could start paying all the back child support he owes for nine children. As for Dr Phil, he was too hard on Ted – he and Oprah should retire together.

  13. lrm says:

i have seriously been thinking about opening up a detox center in our area since we don’t have one, i think when he is done he could come help us out.
