Current location of my phone as of 11:47am: corner of Congress & 4th, Troy

Last night, my zipper broke on my sweater, which contained my phone (Blackberry 3G Curve). As a result, I lost it somewhere in the vicinity of Seventh Ave. in North Troy between Hoosick and Park Avenue.

Someone picked it up, but didn’t answer any phone calls when I tried to call. I called the Troy Police, and they too tried to call it with no avail. The Desk Sergeant on duty suggested I fill out a police report in the AM, which I did before heading to work.

What I’ve also been doing in the meantime is tracking the phone using Sprint’s “Family Location” feature, which I just opted into for a free trial last night after I realized the phone had been lost.

I’ll be posting periodic updates of the location of the phone on my Tumblr, and you can also read real-time updates on Twitter @KevinMarshall.

Wish me luck, because I really don’t have the money for a new phone (spoiler: I am poor and this blogging gig literally does not pay).

Real quick:

  • No, it is not in a cab.
  • No, it is not on a bus.

At the risk of giving away details of an ongoing investigation, how do you know it isn’t in a cab? Someone who works as a cab driver couldn’t have picked it up? Just curious…

  2. Rob Madeo says:

A cab stand? I thought local cabs were dispatched directly to the address of the person who calls for them.

  3. Tony Barbaro says:

Maybe a pigeon picked up and is making the rounds. If it ends up in washington park at lunch time you’ll know for sure…..

  4. Roger Green says:

Someone asked me why I don’t buy one of the iPhone thingies; this is why. Good luck.

  5. jakester says:

I think someone is driving around looing for a buyer for it.

  6. jakester says:

will you be able to track in when it goes dead

  7. HomeTownGirl says:

Is there a reward for said phone?

  8. HomeTownGirl says:

    Ha! Right. Silly me :)
    Good luck finding it Kevin!

  9. Adrienne says:

talk about the WORST place to lose somehing of value lol…

  10. Sue says:

Have we completely ruled out that it is strapped to a dog and he’s looking all over the place for you? Cause that’s got Disney Movie written all over it – which could help solve the poor thing.

  11. Terry says:

Got to think of who drives to multiple stops throughout day. If not taxi, then food delivery, courier, property maintenance, TU ad salesman.

  12. ErinsDad says:

I have a Spint BB, case, charger you can free-cycle. It’s in fine shape. You’d need to bring it by Sprint for a SIM card and activation. You’re welcome to it.

  13. Chuck Miller says:

I just checked for you. Your phone’s not in Cardachrome. Then again, if my car’s making trips without me behind the wheel… maybe I should have nicknamed my car “Herbie.”

  14. Michelle says:

Whats the point of tracking it ?? Are u going to make a stop at one of these locations ?? Maybe u should let the police know ur tracking it and what uve found out, then they can go knock on a few doors..

  15. ErinsDad says:

Following on Tumblr. Cue the Bourne Identity Soundtrack….

  16. tg says:

What’s the point of advertising GPS tracking of your phone in case it’s lost or stolen if the police cannot do anything about it once the phone is located? That seems very misleading. And I still don’t understand why the police cannot go up to the person who has the phone; isn’t that probable cause for search if they know they have the phone?

  17. mom2xys says:

How about sending yourself a text and telling him (or her) that you want your phone back!

  18. Tim in Waterford says:

So what’s the endgame, then? Obviously the police aren’t interested in helping you out, so are you hoping someone takes the law into their own hands and confronts the guy?

  19. K says:

have they made any calls from it? if you’ve turned the phone service off – it’s kind of stupid for them to keep the phone – yes?

  20. Thank our lucky stars you didn’t tell us why the zipper broke.

  21. Jen says:

Couldn’t you just go near where it’s located and have a friend keep calling your phone until you hear it ringing? Have you searched online for the numbers you’ve called recently? Start calling all of them and asking who has your phone. It’s like a mini-treasure hunt…yet here I am stuck at work on a beautiful day.

  22. u2 says:

I’m not surprised you haven’t found it, as I’m sure it has Dana White’s number in it. Or at least Joe Rogan’s.

    • u2 - Thank God that’s not actually the case. The best I got is a couple DMs from Dana, one consisting of “lol” and other “ha!”. Which is the same exact reaction Batista got from Dana when he approached Strikeforce to resume contract talks after the Zuffa purchase.

Jen - See above comments. Phone service was discontinued. They can’t use it/can’t be called.

  23. John says:

Has the phone stopped moving since it was lost? Maybe tonight you should go to where it is located and “steal” it back.

  24. Kari says:

I think you’re right. It’s strapped to the back of a dog wandering around Troy. :)

  25. luvpudders says:

I can’t imagine why someone would take a cell phone. Can’t you get caught if you try to use the serial number of that phone, for example.

Because of my location, numerous cell phones end up on my property. I think they fall off the roof of a car (strange, indeed). I have been diligent about returning these phones and didn’t even get a THANK YOU for it. One phone cost $200 (about five years ago) and the woman still never said THANK YOU–after waiting 30 minutes for her to show up. Also, the phone carrier clerk started asking 101 questions as if I stole the phone and was I “sure” I didn’t know where the box was.

Next time, the found phone gets dumped in a mailbox or trash.
