You used to be able to purchase them individually when I worked for the company a while back. What a wackadoodle!

  2. Indigo says:

Clearly the employee didn’t have a calculator handy to figure out that 1 munchkin would be $0.25

I mean what is wrong with Tim! Expecting some minimum wage kid to do basic math in his head… the nerve!

  3. luvpudders says:

No longer a fan of DD. Solution: Keurig K-Cups (Breakfast or Nantucket Blend) and Hannaford donut holes purchased a couple of times a week. Approximately $1 or so for breakfast–and no aggravation.

  4. Em says:

    Hahahahahaha!
    Awesome.

  5. Tim in Waterford says:

Big fan of the Keurig as well (complete with automatic recurring delivery from greenmountaincoffee.com), and the weird thing is, before I first discovered the Keurig brewer, I was never a big coffee person. I’d get DD iced coffee occasionally in the summer, but I was never a big fan of hot coffee. Granted, I still don’t drink it for its taste, more because it’s a caffeine delivery device.

Anyway, what I was going to say is that DD plans on coming out with their own K-Cups later this year, as does Starbucks.

  6. tj says:

Yeah, I’d have to say that Dunkin Donuts employees are definitely not rocket scientists. On another note, I wish I had Tim’s willpower, I can’t eat just one Munchkin!

  7. cb says:

Just a comment to Tim about Keurig cups.

You can buy a filter that fits into the spot where the K-cup goes, then you can fill it with which ever ground coffee you like instead of having to wait for your favorite coffee to market the cup.

  8. Michelle says:

Maybe the employee couldnt figure out that $1.00 divided by 4 is .25..If i didnt know basic math i might get a little irate myself..

  9. Michelle says:

Ha Just realized Indigo had the same comment, sorry..

  10. luvpudders says:

Keurig filter: We found it to be clumsy to use.

I would guess a 25-cent sale isn’t worth it to DD, but I’ve thrown away too many cups of burned/stale coffee to even attempt to go there again.

Thank you Kevin for giving me a great laugh on this crazy hectic homicidal morning of mine:) Here’s a situation that happened to my wife at a DD last year. Almost verbatim, and I don’t remember the exact order or dollar amount, but you’ll get the gist of it:

    wife: “i’d like a coffee”
dde: “that’ll be $1.92, drive around”
wife: [handing dde the money, he too quickly turns to enter into the register]
wife: “excuse me, i have the change too.” [hands him two cents]
dde: “um, you gave me too much.”
wife: “no, i gave you $2.02 so I can just get a dime back.”
dde: [looking dumbfounded] “But you gave me too much. $2.00 was more than enough.” [scoff]
wife: “not a big deal, just didn’t want pennies back etc.” [explains that $2.02 minus $1.92 is 10 cents]
wife: “so all you have to do is give me 10 cents back.”
dde: “well, i already entered it into the register, so i’ll just give you the two cents back.”
wife: [doesn’t want to argue] “that’s fine, not a big deal. but if you gave me the dime, it’s not going to screw up your register. It will still balance out at the end of your shift.”
    dde: [scoff] “whatever”
    wife: “excuse me???”

All hell broke loose after that. My usually polite and lady-like wife turned into Carrie Heffernan on that employee.

  12. hounder says:

my bad. i didn’t detail the fact that my wife gave him two singles.

  13. jakester says:

Shoulda gave Tim one for a dollar and eaten the other three or gave them to me :o)

  14. Mickey says:

It was on the Upper East Side…no wonder the employee was rude and snotty.

  15. Tim in Waterford says:

@cb: Yup, I’ve got a Keurig filter. Used it today, as a matter of fact, as I’m out of K-Cups. The previous comment about preferring the Keurig machine over buying from DD simply got me thinking about the DD K-Cups.

@hounder: That’s why I prefer to hand over the change first. I hate it when people put bills in my hand and then try to put coins on top; the coins have a tendency to fall off.

As for the main topic, I wonder if the register even allows you to sell one Munchkin. There’s probably buttons for 4 and whatever size boxes they sell these days with anything else requiring a manager’s intervention and/or the ritual sacrifice of a goat.

  16. Indigo says:

Hounder, I often “pay too much” so that I won’t have an excess of pennies in my purse. I have since stopped being surprised that most young people do not know how to make change if the register doesn’t tell them what it is.

  17. Amanda Talar says:

Who eats one munchkin?! Regardless, that’s hilarious.

But — does he think the Upper East Side DD would have dignified employees who drink their coffee with their pinky raised? It’s Dunkin’ freakin’ Donuts.

  18. Tim O'Leary says:

@Amanda – As I didn’t expect this Facebook note would be seen by anyone other than my friends, I didn’t elaborate on the location. The reason I mentioned that this was on the Upper East Side is that I live in Harlem, and have never encountered that kind of behavior in the so-called “rougher” neighborhood.

  19. Amanda Talar says:

Tim — Ahhh, that is amazing. That makes the whole story that much more hilarious. Thanks for sharing that bit!

  20. CoolMom says:

so whatz w/the pic of the two dudes huggin’ and the empty beers lined up in front of them?!? lol

  21. HomeTownGirl says:

I once went to the Dunkin Donuts on Route 9 in Schodack and they were “out of coffee”. True story.

  22. Tony Barbaro says:

Used to work at the pharmacy accross from dd on 9 and 20…I would often do the coffee run….
Woman at counter: I’ll have a dozen donuts.
Kid behind register(we’ll call him Opie):we are all out of donuts.
Woman:what? it’s a saturday morning at 9am and you are all out of donuts?
    Opie: it’s not OUR fault.

  23. Tim in Waterford says:

You’d think they could just go in back and make more, but most DDs these days don’t actually make the doughnuts (and bagels, and muffins, etc.) on premises. They’re trucked in from a central location; I believe it’s somewhere in Albany. So they either had a greater-than-expected run, someone screwed up when ordering inventory, or the inventory hadn’t arrived yet.

Unfortunately, I don’t remember where I heard that, so I can’t back that up for anyone who wants proof.

  24. Tim O'Leary says:

@CoolMom – That’s my boyfriend and me at a party in my apartment. I’m the one on the right. I was a lot less huggy when I was at Dunkin Donuts.

  25. zz says:

@Hounder – I had the same problem at Subway!

The total came to $17.25, I gave the girl $22.25.
She stared at the money for a good 20 seconds & then, “Do you want me to use the twenty?”
I said “If you ring in $22.25, the change will be $5.00.”
She just stared again. The manager/owner was sitting near the counter. I looked at him, he smirked. I wanted to punch him in the throat.
She was just clueless & innocent, never became rude. I looked back at her, smiled sweetly & said “Just try it, I swear, it will magically tell you to give me $5.00.”

She did it, the register said it, her eyes got really wide & she smiled so strangely. It was like watching the universe thwack her on the head with secret knowledge.
