My husband is currently commuting to Texas and is getting sick of everyone there assuming he’s from NYC. There’s a whole wide state of beautiful farms and woodlands above NYC!

Of course a lot of that comes from NYC-ers not realizing that there is more to NY than just “the city”.

    Definitely like the t.

    Upstate…the other New York

Ann, please lighten up on the anti-NYC snark. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but it’s like no other place in the world and frankly, sustains the state and the country financially. Your husband needs to lighten up too. He should think about the fact that he’s talking to Texans! ;-) Ask people who live in New Mexico what they think about Texans. And I’m sure you assume all Californians you meet live in either LA or San Francisco. When I’m traveling to other states and people ask me where I live I say upstate NY. It’s that simple.

Naaaaah, I’m with Ann. I really do love NYC, but upstate is where my roots are.
I WILL tell people that I’m from upstate NY and many of them just don’t seem to hear the “upstate” part. It’s like it doesn’t even register with them, and they will proceed to ask me about something like “Oh! Were you near the towers on 9/11?”
… nope. I was about 2 1/2 hours away. Probably had about the same experience as you.

A surprising number of out of state American citizens don’t even realize that New York is a state (a HUGE state!), not just a city. I’m completely serious.

Some people from NYC who have never been upstate don’t realize what life is like past Westchester County.
