Unless you’re a dead person, you’ve seen “The Avengers” and you saw at least the first “post-credits” scene that revealed the villain for a future installment in the film franchise: Thanos.

If you cheered like the people in the theater I went to did, then you should go to the Woodstock Day School Comic Convention this Sunday and shake the hand of the man who created him: Jim Starlin.

Also at this event:

  • Ron Marz, another comic legend and all-around great guy
  • Matthew Dow Smith, great artist who’s done excellent work on IDW’s Doctor Who comics
  • Joe Sinnott, one of the best inkers of all time and one of the few men who did the great Jack Kirby justice
  • Richard Clark
  • Jennifer Meyer
  • David Rodriguez
  • Discussion Panels
  • Gallery: the History of Batman
  • FREE Magic: The Gathering & Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments
  • and more!

Should be a Hell of a time. It’s this Sunday, May 20th, from 12-5pm, and admission is only $5. Well worth it, and proceeds go to the Woodstock Day School.

Aw snap. I’m not a dead person and I haven’t seen Avengers? Thanos? Can Captain Mar-Vell be far behind?

You joke (I think), but Marvel’s in the process of bringing that character back from the dead. And they’re going to be doing it in one of the Avengers titles this Summer, possibly the “Avengers Assemble!” title that’s tailored to fans of the movie. That’s not an accident.

      • Eric Newsom says:

I’m not actually joking about anything above. I told you I only read kids comics! But Mar-Vell was one of my favorites as a kid. Rick Jones, too. Avengers during the Kree-Skrull War era was my favorite of my Dad’s old comics. Well, maybe actually the Shooter/Swan Legion of Super-Heroes books were. Maybe those two were tied. “THE ONLY GOOD ALIEN IS A DEAD ALIEN!”

Oh, well good! Ditto for me. I’ve always had a soft spot for the cosmic aspect of the Marvel Universe. Though I cringe at the thought of Marvel being brought back to life as a character in the books, simply because his is the only permanent and really meaningful death remaining in the House. I wouldn’t say it’s a foregone conclusion, but I think it’s obvious he’s being brought back because there’s talk of bringing him into a future Avengers movie. Which, in terms of the movies, would be fine by me. And FWIW I’m with you and your Dad: my favorite Avengers stories were always the cosmic ones – the Kree/Skrull stuff, Operation Galactic Storm, etcetera. Maybe it’s just because it made a much stronger case for their existence as a team than the domestic threats, which were usually villains that were regularly defeated in solo books.

And oh boy, the Legion. I love me some Legion. Always have and always will.
