The Church of Scientology, the c—sorry, “new religion” that boasts John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Tom Cruise and others among its numbers is under investigation for human trafficking and free labor.

The allegations surfaced after the New Yorker did a piece on writer/director Paul Haggis, who left the Church over its latent homophobia and suspicions that something was amiss with the group whose members believe things in science fiction novels actually happened.

The Church is no stranger to federal investigations. In the 1970s several Church leaders, including founder L. Ron Hubbard‘s wife Mary Sue, were convicted of obstructing justice, burglary of government offices, and theft of documents and government property as part of a program known as “Operation Snow White.” The conspiracy  also involved Church members infiltrating various government agencies by attaining clerical and security positions.

Also, I want to point you to prominent Church leader Tom Cruise.

Anyone else notice a theme with leaders of new religions?

All seem to have a strange Christ motif going with their look; the highest position in their organization coming with a prerequisite of long hair, a beard (or close approximation), strange title, and overcompensation of adolescent awkwardness through the relentless pursuit of control and affections of wome—okay, maybe Tom’s a LITTLE different, but you see what I mean.

That’s it? Just a bunch of critical gossip. The claims of the people working for 50 dollars a week or a member working for 6 years on the camp to re-habilitate him is to me obvious discreditable people with lame allegations. The person that stayed on the camp site for 6 years I could totally see that if he liked the people he was around and it was in a nice environment that would be rehabilitating in itself and a great place to escape and live in clarity for as long as one could afford. There’s nothing wrong with the group for that. That just shows the human nature of some people. Not all people just some. I still have hope for humanity. This person that was allowed to stay there and take advantage of the Camp for 6 years must not have got the girl he was sticking around for and left spiteful and leave spreading what the group offered for good is trying to turn it bad. People like that ruin good things for other people by calasing the people that want to extend a hand to people in need but they get bit in the process. Then the chef’s, there’s nothing wrong with making sure you are eating healthy meals and actually God tells us we are temples of the Holy Spirit so we NEED to be taking care of our health. That allegation whether it is true or not it’s from somebody that is jealous or trying to be spiteful. I am not a member of the Church and I do not believe in their beliefs and I was hoping for a good story that would bring to light some good dirt on them, but reading this was a waste of time and I had to write type this because I am surprised that this media website would even allow junk like that to be a article. Unless, maybe this is like the Enquirer or something as I am unfamiliar with timesunion.com. I just allowed “Bing” to be my default browser and they had this on the front page. For the most part this article just revealed to me BINGS perspective of what they will post as a headliner and the lack of quality and credibility you would think they would be looking for. I will give them a week and if they continue to have junk like that as headliners I will go back to Google’s plain search window as my Home Page.

    • Sam - You clearly spent more time writing that comment than you did looking at this blog post, otherwise you’d…well, know it was a blog post.

P.S. You got a little kool-aid on your chin there.

  2. Joe says:

@sam is Kevin wrote anymore about this “church” he may be abducted by aliens ans probed so I appluad his restraint for his safety!!!

  3. Jason Purvis says:

I think there is an important message in Sam’s comment and that is that Kevin’s post made the front page of Bing. Congrats, my friend.

  4. JDB says:

Holy Crap, Kevin I love your comment!! I wouldn’t drink the kool-aide at a 5 years birthday party at Chuck-E-Cheese!

  5. derryX says:

I don’t know if I believe anything about the human trafficking, but I definitely belive the account Josh Brolin gives here (http://www.usmagazine.com/celebritynews/news/josh-brolin-reveals-bizarre-john-travolta-scientology-encounter-201182).

I wish I knew about this when I was single… do hot wives go along with membership?

Sam, don’t listen to your dog, and there is no comet coming for you.
Have a couple of beers and lay off the bong !

  7. EZ says:

Sam’s rant was awesome for so many reasons. I can’t wait to read the first half again and try to figure out what it means. I think he (she) may have stumbled upon the true meaning of life. And if not, I’ll switch my search browser which possibly lies to me.

  8. Will King says:

Scientology is a cult?! Holy sh*&!!

Wait…can I say cult or is that just you that can’t say it?

  9. Steve says:

I read Sam’s comment 3 times and still have NO idea what he is saying! Awesome rebuttal about the Kool-Aid AND the “it’s a blog”, Kevin! We should all ask ourselves, “what would Tom do?” LOL….

  10. Jen says:

Sam, this isn’t an article. It’s a blog post. Not everyone is under the belief that bloggers are journalists. Personally, I think they’re writers and/or folks who are craving attention for one reason or another.

Kevin, if you’re an aspiring journalist I’ll have to apologize. You strike me more as a writer…Less a late breaking, story-cracking journalist.

  11. Em says:

    Free Katie Holmes!!

  12. Sue says:

I think you’re short-changing Tom Cruise – his awkwardness went way beyond his adolescence.

  13. HomeTownGirl says:

I think Sam IS Tom Cruise. 3 letters in the name Sam, 3 letters in the name Tom. Hmmmmmm. Coincidence?? I think NOT !

  15. K.Judge says:

To further Sams’ point, I was trolling around on bingo too boy I was flabbier gashed to read Church of Scientology Under Investigation for Human Trafficking. Well I already knew this but now I am appalled. That Kimbo slice was allowed to stay there and take advantage of the Camp for 3 years I also left spiteful and leave spreading what the group offered for good is trying to turn it bad.

  16. Jango Davis says:

Godo work Kevin on keeping this sham of a religon (well, they’re all shames, but Scientology is a sham of a sham) in the local spotlight.

Xenu see, Xenu know, Xenu no eat that yellow snow…

  17. tiredofthehorrorstories says:

Kudos Kevin on yet another un-opinionated story. Hahahaha. Cult? Well, by the very basic definition, every orginazation is a cult. Every thing from Chritianity, Budism, NArcotics Anonymous, etc. After all. they do have one common cause of belief. And, ass for living on the ‘Campus” Hmmmmmm. Who really cares. Hey, I worked on a farm all my life and slinging cow, horse, sheep, and chicken poo and nobody ever said it was in violation of child labor laws. Honestly, I think the manure made me grow into the person I am today….Full of …well, you know.

    Hahahahaha

    • “Kudos Kevin on yet another un-opinionated story. Hahahaha.”

      1. Un-opinionated isn’t a word. The word you’re looking for is “objective.” Which leads to…
      2. It’s not supposed to be objective, because it’s not a story. It’s a…
      3. Blog. You know this is a blog, right? Because it says “blog” all over the place.

Sam – Based on your response, I believe that the Scientologists would be happy to have you join them.

    @26, that’s because T.C. is the “farthest out there”……

  24. Eric says:

Hey, congratulations Kevin on making…uh…the front page of Bing?

  25. Tim says:

Oh Kevin, please be careful what you say about the Scientologists! You really don’t want Tom Cruise showing up on your doorstep getting in your face asking “so, what are your crimes, are you still beating your wife?” There’s a good reason that the Anonymous people wear masks to protests.

  26. Ilovesnow says:

Uh oh, Kevin. You realize they monitor the internet for all mentions, right? You’re going to be sued any moment now, not to mention spammed by Scientology shills, harassed, and generally besmirched. Seriously, though, they are scary dangerous people.

  27. Ilovesnow says:

Good point, go get ‘em, tiger!
