As you can see above, Chris Schewe – the guy who chained himself to the SUNY Fountain in “protest” of the cancellation of Fountain Day – fessed up to the fact that the whole thing was a publicity stunt. He then actually liked his own status, which says more about him than a thousand videos of him eating toiletries ever could.

Schewe also claims on his Facebook page that he personally met with the President of SUNY Albany, George Philip, and that he was subsequently expelled for his actions. I received an e-mail from the Office of the President at 4:35pm today that confirms that isn’t the case, and that Schewe is still a registered student.

Other false claims on his Facebook page: that his actions are responsible for a decision to turn the Fountain on next month, and that what he does is considered comedy.

Schewe is also known to Troy residents. Years ago he was a regular at O’Leary’s on 15th Street and would perform the same sort of stunts – eating toilet paper and tampons – for drinks and cash.

(thanks to Keep Albany Boring for posting the status update this morning)

Dammit, I wanted to be the one who pointed out that he liked his own status… speaks volumes, ha.

  2. hellomolly says:

Ugh. Glanced at his YouTube and facebook pages… can’t lie, just looking at him gives me the overwhelming urge to punch him in the face…

  3. Yay! says:

Thank goodness!! It’s about time people realized. I don’t know what was worse, his publicity stunt or the people that actually believed he would bring fountain day back. I hope he’s done now. He is a really scary/disturbed individual

  4. Roz says:

Did anyone ever check to see if this guy is really a veteran?

  5. Hal Jordan says:

If one day I ever forget to use an alias with a chick and wind up saddled with a kid, I will use this guy as an example of what happens when you use Facebook. A powerful message.

  6. Roz – to the best of my knowledge, he is.

  7. Molly says:

Looking at his FB page, he seems to like ALL his own comments, and pretty much all of the comments he gets from other people too.

  8. Tony Barbaro says:

So Wait….I quit my job to go around the country and protest the closing of fountains, and the fascist cancelling of college “rights of passage” by the “man” and this guy was just kidding…..great, he was my Yoda….
He ate tampons? That’s comedy. Does he tell fart jokes too?

  9. Mick says:

More impressive is someone gets to call him Dad.

  10. Chuck Miller says:

I think what’s really sad is that not only was he able to exploit the controversy regarding Fountain Day and Kegs and Eggs into a publicity stunt, but that so many people just went along with the idea that a 41-year-old UAlbany student could put together such a protest – and believe that it was genuine. Grr.

  11. jakester says:

If he’s a vet with PTSS, someone should get him some help instead of punching him in the face, IMO. Not a normal dude…

  12. countrymama says:

Sadly, he accomplished what he set out to do.

The more we talk, blog and argue about him, the more we’re all just giving him exactly what he wants – attention.

    Bad publicity is publicity nonetheless.

  13. me neither says:

Looks like this guys’ trying to be the next Charlie Sheen from that ridiculous rant. Only problem is he forgot that Charlie Sheen has something that he doesn’t……… talent. Hey buddy, I’ll buy your next drink if you never resurface again.

  14. countrymama says:

I don’t mean to imply that this guy is going to suddenly be famous and have specials on comedy central. But he was looking for attention – he got it. Some people simply don’t care what kind of attention they draw – all that matters is that they’re getting it, one way or another.

The more that people pay attention, the more enjoyment they get out of their stupid stunts. The less people pay attention, the more ridiculous their stupid stunts become.

    Case in point?

The entire cast of the “Jackass” shows/films.
    Are their stunts utterly stupid/pointless/idiotic?
    Yup.
    Are they famous?
    Yup.
    Why?
Because people paid attention – even if it was just to declare that they are all, Jackasses.

  15. ann says:

I agree with hellomolly. He just has that kind of face…

Talk about an attention glutton! I really don’t think it matters to him if the attention is good or bad.

Yeah, let’s move on to something more worthy, like the invasion of wild pigs into the state.

  16. The icing on the cake was liking his own status!

  17. HomeTownGirl says:

His 15 minutes is over. He didn’t even know how to do that successfully. This guy has some serious problems, and the worst part is that he has children. It’s not bad enough that he is a poor role model for the SUNYA students (41 yr old bragging about smoking pot, eating tampons, and just being plain stupid), imagine the kind of role model he must be at home. Expelled or not, I think this guy should be required to take a psych exam before they let him back into a classroom, and I think CPS should be watching. Have we not learned anything about ignoring warning signs prior to school shootings?

  18. Jango Davis says:

What did this guy do in Iraq? Serve as Saddam Hussein’s PR guy?

  19. Bob-O says:

As a 10 year veteran, I find this guy to be a disgrace not only to the military, but to the City of Albany, UAlbany, and the United States. He lets us know he’s a veteran of the military (allegedy), a pot smoker, and a “comedian”. But….upon further review….the joke is on him. He will have to explain to his children how he soiled their name. I would LOVE for him to post his DD214 (military discharge paper) on his pathetic website. Any further discussion, coverage or blogs on him will only serve his insatiable thirst for attention. His poor kids, this is the legacy he will leave for them. Sad excuse for a soldier, father, husband and human being.

  20. Vincent Barr says:

Yeah, I stopped reading when I heard he liked his own Facebook status. He probably was the first one, too.

    Yucktown, USA.

  21. crabby old Emily says:

I have a problem to this guy being referred to as a “student”.
There are much more accurate descriptions.

  22. sad says:

The sad part is that he actually has more fans now. He is really pushing the veteran pity thing, more stories about having a helicopter landing on him, losing twenty eight friends, falling through a skylight , saving Kuwait girls etc. Wish there was a way to know if he was truly in the service.

I grew up with a mother who has possible munchhausens (among many other disorders never diagnosed). She did anything and everything to get sympathy and attention including but not limited to shaving her head and lying about having cancer when I was a kid, and desperately wanting me to be ill.

Something is very wrong with this guy and his stories scream some kind of illness, not to mention the obvious pica. I hope he is not lying about being a vet or about the stories because it disrespects those that have been there. His Facebook is full of him contradicting himself and his own stories. Seeing what I have seen, I have serious doubts but my view is obviously tainted from personal experience with people that feed and live on pity.

Wish we could find out the truth

  23. Suzanne says:

My 13 year old nephew wanted to gawk at “the idiot in the fountain” this past Sunday, so we took him over there. This moron wasn’t even there…

So much for staying until Monday at noon.

He just made SUNY look even worse!

  24. John says:

It wasn’t until I read his post that I realized how heartbroken I am that I won’t be able to do beely flops in the fountain this year….sad face…

  25. jakester says:

There are some pretty mean statements about a guy who MAY have been damaged while serving his country… in some cases it may be worse than losing a limb. While we don’t know the story completely regarding his military service and condition, if any, I’ll reserve my judgement/opinion. Just my own feelings…

  26. alynn says:

Chris has been like this since high school… can’t blame the military.

  27. Get Real © says:

Eating toilet paper and tampons for drinks? Oh damn. I’d hate to see what he would do just for a bite of a man’s cheeseburger. Eww. :|

  28. William says:

i went to school with chris. he was never quite so deranged before the military. he DID enjoy doing stunts and stupid things to amuse classmates, but that was elementary school! i didn’t see as much of him in high school, but i know that after the military he really became something else – anyways, to the people saying he will make it nowhere etc. he has millions and millions of views and his followers are increasing in thousands per day. he is going to be on tosh.o soon as well.
