The Times Union saw fit to feature my departure today in its print edition:

Like I said, it was amicable and stuff like this shows it. So long and thanks for all the fish.

…wait a minute, NO MENTION OF KEVIN MARSHALL ONLINE DOT COM?! You’re dead to me, you corporate shits.

      Thanks! :D

Shits? You can’t say shits on a corporate owned… wait, never mind, carry on.

  • Daniel Nester

I miss JangoDavis and Sebastian Barre already.

  • Rob Madeo

Don’t forget that they own your old posts. AND YOUR SOUL, KEVIN MARSHALL, YOUR SOUL!

Enjoy your new found freedom, man. Say what you wanna say, piss off who you wanna piss off… ha ha ha ha…

Of course, KM seemed to do that already on the TU site, so what’s the diff?

  • J. Eric Smith

Did they try to pitch you the line as you walked out the door that nobody but your friends and family will ever read your post-corporate blog, so they’ll just hold on to all your own stuff there on their site . . . so REAL readers can read it . . . as a favor to you . . . because they’re nice like that . . . and it’s a community . . .

They said they’d be archiving it. Which is fine by me, honestly, since they were kind enough to give me the export to bring all the old stuff over on this space as well.

As for “nobody but your friends and family” – nah, I wasn’t given that line. They know me too well. ;)

No shit: I just googled “times union blogs friends and family” to see if I could find the germane quote for Roz above, and look what was top response to that post: http://blog.timesunion.com/michaelhuber/goodbye-nina-and-kevin-hello-jodie-gina-joe-deanna-and-vera/1299/ . . .

        • Roz Nella Cucina

The exact quote is “When you blog with us, you’re reaching way more peeps than friends/family,” which Mr. Huber stated on Twitter on October 29, 2010. – Roz

            Whitewash my fence, blogger.

Woah they give you all your contents back. Interesting SEO situation. Gee, I just used the S word again.

Yep! It’s one of the few perks granted. You don’t get pay, but you do get exposure and you share the content, so to speak. And it was actually very quick: I asked for the export file (when I realized such a thing existed and I needed it) late on Friday and had it by Sunday.

Archived = they take your link off of the portal page, but everything remains as is, otherwise (I’m still there, a year later), so, yes, it does create search conflicts when the same posts appear in multiple places with the same publication dates. I originally got the TU export too, and put all of my TU posts up on my own website, but then decided to wipe them all and just go forward with (mostly) new material at Indie Albany. It seemed to me that having it in both places somehow indicated to searchers who saw the same articles appearing in multiple/related spaces in their search results that I somehow endorsed or cross-promoted my material still being on the TU, which of course I don’t. (I’m not advocating such an approach for Kevin, mind you, since he left under different terms than I did, but rather just noting how I dealt with the SEO conflict myself . . . ).

The “nobody but your friends and family” comment turned out to be a blessing for IndieAlbany, as I recall. ;) -Roz

This is great, because now I can cyber-bully you without fear of reprisal from the blog czar. Gird your loins, Marshall.

      Oh shit.

Of course, the excerpted stuff in the TU often does not represent the heart of what I wanted to say, either. I’ve learned to live with it.
And you won’t have that problem anymore.

  • Tonybarbaro

this is like the ex-patriot club……I feel like I should quit the TU and hang w/ you guys….but I have no soul. ;)
