An actual sign on a storefront in Troy:

Thanks for reading! In the Present Tense is a blog by Kevin Marshall. Sometimes it will be updated every day at 10:00am, and sometimes two or three additional posts a day will be submitted. Sometimes, though, no post at all will be posted for that day. Some weeks you will only get a post every other day, some weeks there will be no posts at all. This blog is about being a man, except when it’s about dating, and sometimes about pop culture and local news items.

My favorite is the sign on the laundremat around the corner. It says “We’re open ‘7AM-Midnight'” and it actually has quotey marks around the business hours. I can picture someone doing the quotey fingers as they say it, too. I really don’t know how to read that.

Are they citing another source? Like…did their manager once say “7AM-midnight” and they had to cover their asses just in case they couldn’t make good on his promise? Like “Yeah, Phil sez ‘7AM-Midnight,’ but you know Phil. That’s just Phil being Phil.”

Or perhaps they meant it in a sarcastic/ironic/winking kind of way? Like “Yeah, we SAY ‘7AM to midnight,’ but let me tell you, there’s a lot of action going on behind these doors past midnight. Especially in the back room. Holler. THIS guy knows what I’m talking about, right, bro?”
