Elliot Smith

What do Fly 92’s Baby Bear, John Gray, Phil Bayly, Jessica Layton, Kristi Gustafson, and US Olympians Andrew Weibrecht and Lowell Bailey have in common with yours truly?

All have been given the honor and the privilege of being featured on the TU High School Blog’s “What’s On Your iPod?”. It’s a feature where local luminaries, persons of interest, and even losers like me get asked “what’re you listening to?”

Click here to check it out, and feel free to tell me what a pretentious jerk I am about music! For what it’s worth, my tastes most closely align with the US Olympians.

  1. Elliott Smith, hmmm? He’s an important figure over at the Upstate Ether blog: http://upstateether.wordpress.com/category/elliott-smith/ (note: language warning/potentially offensive/humorous content, depending upon your worldview).

  2. I am both befuddled and delighted by that blog.

  3. Yeah, me too . . . it’s like some cultural train wreck overseen by Salvador Dali on an absinthe bender . . . I can’t stop looking, even though I know it’s bad for me . . .

  4. Amanda Talar says:

Oh boy, wait until you see my list…not nearly as seasoned as yours. But I’m convinced you made up random names. I listen to Jack Trevolbardle a lot and a little Luxempork ;) On a serious note, I am now making a note to check your list out. I heart new music!

  5. J Eric – No, can’t stop looking. Sort of like a literary car wreck. Or “Degrassi: The Next Generation.”

Amanda – You listen to Luxempork? What overrated dreck! You’re such a hipster. ;)

  6. Leigh says:

Well this list kind of made my day, even if it is padded with made-up band names. ;) Loooove me some Neko. Also, this gives me the chance to boast that I once saw Elliott Smith in concert. (Before you start thinking I’m too cool to hang out with…I didn’t even know who he was at the time. Silly.)

  7. Let’s see, today I have:
Alkaline Trio, Beach House, Frightened Rabbit, Gretchen Wilson, Hot Chip, Joe Bonnamasa, Los Campasinos!, Magnetic Fields, Midlake, Motion City Soundtrack, Rogue Wave, Shearwater, Sneaker Pimps, Spoon, The Foy Brothers (local band), We Were Promised Jetpacks, Yeasayer.
    I didn’t make any names up ;-)

  8. HopeFul says:

    Who are these people?

  9. #9 – Andrew Gregory, J. Eric Smith, Amanda Talar and Leigh are all fellow TU bloggers!

Kidding – I’m sure you meant the artists I selected, they all have links to their respective profiles on Last.FM.

  10. Naomi Seldin says:

People seem concerned when I tell them I love Elliott Smith. Why is that?

    • Because some people think because he was sad and his tunes mostly melancholy, you must be as well. They must also think all those kids that read Harry Potter are real life wizards.

  11. Naomi Seldin says:

I am sad and melancholy a lot of the time, actually. I just put on a good public face.

  12. Los Campesinos are aces. I’ve got their whole catalog, and love any band that can rock a glockenspiel.

    Re: Naomi at #11 . . . Because he’s the Tlatquiatluk?

I reset my iPod play counts on Mother’s Day every year (because the first iPod in the house was given to my wife that day), and post the top songs played in the prior year on my blog . . . if that day were today, the top ten would include ditties by:

    Genesis
    Gnonnas Pedro et ses Dadjes
    The Bee Gees
    The Eagles
    Mos Def
    Paul McCartney
    David Bowie
    British Sea Power
    Edan
    Napalm Death

It’s still a tight competition, with dueling iPods (mine and my wife’s) being loaded into the same account . . .

    • Folks, true story about our fellow blogger Naomi – she cuts her hair herself while playing “Needle in the Hay” in a loop.

      J. Eric – your taste in music continues to make me happy.
