Sheen, who has more attention than ever, needs less of it.

The last few days we’ve been inundated on television and through online outlets with various interviews with Charlie Sheen, whose public self-destruction over the course of the last year has culminated in a spectacular manic episode.

The latest included him passing a blood and urine drug test over the weekend administered by the Radar Online. The urine test is limited but covers three days potentially, while the blood test surprisingly can only capture the previous twenty-four hours.

We all know the details: he’s living with a porn star and a “model,” he’s not bi-polar he’s bi-winning, the cancellation of the remainder of the current season of “Two and a Half Men,” the anti-semitic remarks, and so on and so forth.

What concerns me most of all is how much entertainment value we’re getting out of this. When I say we, I absolutely include myself in that. I’m riveted by the coverage, even while I’m privately condemning the interviewers for encouraging his delusions of grandeur by increasing his exposure and forums.

What makes it worse is that I’ve already seen this story play out and I know exactly how it ends. Needless to say, there’s no happily ever after. Yet I still find myself sitting here examining his ramblings and picking apart points where he contradicts himself, as if that’s any great exercise.  I find myself watching a slow-motion car crash, knowing full well that there are people inside that car. Except this is worse, because I find it amusing.

Perhaps, as the old Langston Hughes quote infers, we laugh to keep from crying. I just hope that he somehow defies expectations and somehow manages to see himself through to the other end of this thing.

How did they get blood and urine samples, by stealing a pair of his underwear?

  2. Tony Barbaro says:

I am finding it less and less amusing and more sad. Maybe I’m getting old and soft.

  3. LM says:

Very funny show, good script/directing/producing…but VERY tiresome situation/subject now. It’s not a lifestyle I have any interest in trying to understand…

I just read an article a few minutes ago that said the crew of 2.5 Men will be paid for the remaining 4 episodes, also they may be planning to hire John Stamos in light of Sheen’s absence.

I’m not a fan of the show, however what I’ve read from current fans is that his character does not “make” the show. If that’s true, then I have to wonder about the overall effect on the others involved. He’s in the spotlight, being the silly being he’s always been in my opinion.

  5. Will King says:

Charlie Sheen is cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.

  6. Dallas says:

He is just method acting for his character in the show!

I’m fascinated as well, Kevin, and I don’t know why. Maybe we get some sort of sick pleasure knowing that ‘stars’ are not so much above us? I watched him on Piers Morgan last night and I got the feeling he was having some serious drug/alcohol withdrawal and that he’s on the verge of needing a vacation at the funny farm.

  8. Kevin says:

I think Charlie Sheen is just taking advantage of this publicity and taking us all along for the ride, and he is succeeding (winning) at it. It is a strange tactic someone of his stature doesn’t set up this many interviews on his own, he has someone pushing him to take advantage of this spotlight.

  9. D2 says:

I feel sorry for his mother and father.

  10. Peter Bowden says:

I see Sheen rant and I see Gaddafi rant and I wonder ‘Who’s channelling who?’

Both with delusions of grandeur and both out of touch with reality.

It could be worse, you could have a ‘Sheen Phobia’ like this poor lady:

D2, I kind of don’t want to bash his father, but my evil twin kind of wants to make a “Martin Sheen Pinata”. Somehow, it’s escaped from general knowledge, that Charlie took a little abuse growing up, for which his father has been trying very hard for many years to make ammends. Even if you don’t believe in religion, “The measure that you judge you will be judged by”

  12. M.L. Cullen says:

My evil twin still wants to make a ” Martin Sheen Pinata” It’s not general knowledge that Charlie took some abuse growing up. I don’t want to crucify Martin Sheen though, (my better self), because he’s suffered as much as humanly possible.

As funny/odd as Charlie Sheen has become, my wife is still waiting for the sequel of the drunk baby on youtube post you had. It still is cracking her up. I’ll continue to read your blog, however, the wife is waiting for a funny youtube sequel. No pressure though, as the sequel these days doesn’t have to compare to the original.

If Sheen is satisfied that his rehab is complete, he needs to be put on a 24 / 7 suicide watch.

  15. LM says:

Stamos – possible replacement, but I haven’t heard what ROLE he might play. By the time “next season” rolls around, I think some of us will have forgotten about this show. Again, it’s too bad, really.

Too bad FRASIER can’t come in as a new character…I think he could hold his own in this cast.
